Yojimbo pivot screw size?

Can anyone tell me what size torx bits I'd need for the pivot on my Yojimbo (arriving tomorrow if all goes well)?

I'm sure there's a good chance it won't be necessary to tighten it, but my only experience with Spyderco so far has been a Native from New Graham, which had so much horizontal play that I just got done pounding it for 10 minutes on an anvil with a steel punch. (brass punch was just being destroyed by the pivot)

The pivot pin on the Yojimbo actually uses a 3/32 hex wrench. The stop pin and the other back pin use T-6 torx bits. Because of how the pivot works, you need two 3/32 wrenches or one and one that is very similar in size so you just don't spin it around.

As for the Yo' being your second Spydie, it'll blow the Native away. Fantastic knife. I love mine.:)

Excellent, thanks for the info :D

The pivot is also loctited, so you'll need to heat up the screws first.

I didn't realize that on my first Yoji, and nearly stripped the pivot heads.

Haven't had to adjust the pivot on mine at all - also purchased from New Graham.
This is without a doubt, the most perfect work knife I have found for slicing open parcels, opening boxes, cutting plastic strapping and all the other knife uses required in a wharehousing situation - its a boxcutter with real muscle that holds an edge unbelievably well and is so easy to sharpen. For a SD designed knife, this is one helluva utility tool.

Now I'm really confused. The yojimbo arrived today and the first thing I looked at (after being impressed by the handle compared to the native) was he pivot. One side looks like it's a torx that's been mangled to accept a 3/32 hex. (which fits very loosly and is likely to strip it further) This side was loose; no loctite.

The other side IS a torx head, is too small to accept the hex that fits the other side. I don't know what size torx it is, but I don't have anything that fits it.

It looks like my "new" knife either isn't new, or they have some QC problems. I've contacted them to see if maybe I can just replace the two screws without having to ship the knife off. It's otherwise REALLY nice, so I'm pretty disappointed.

I don’t own a Yojimbo anymore, but IIRC, the screw on one side of mine used a T-10 torx driver. The screw on the other side was the same size, but it was so misshapen that a T-9 worked better.

A large batch of Spydercos went out with severely mangled torx-head pivot screws. Sometimes, the screw heads are so stripped out that it’s hard to tell if they’re even torx or not! I guess they’ve started switching to hex-head now though?

I’d try using a T-10 first in the damaged screw. It might help to rotate the driver around and insert it at different angles to see if it will fit.

That's not new. I've only had two Yojimbos, but both had identical Torx head screws on each side of the pivot. Unless somebody tries to adjust it without breaking the loctite, it shouldn't even look like Hex screws.

But again, I've only handled two, that hardly makes me an expert.

The damaged one is damaged to the point that you can only see the torx shape in the deepest part of the head. Not enough left to grab a torx bit, by a long shot. The less or undamaged screw appears to rotate with the opening and closing of the blade, sometimes.

edited to add: Located a several T10 bits, but all are too big for either side. Don't think I have anything smaller.

Wrong size, the Yojimbo pivot was a T-8, if I remember correctly. One of the few Spyders that wasn't a T-10.

:update: I find that my Yo' accepts T-10 torx bits, but the allen key still fits more securely. I know that i haven't stripped them either. I think any loctite that was on the pivot was shaken loose over time from repeated flicks. The pivot pins definitely look closer to allen screws than torx ones. Weird.

Yeah between here and the Spyderco official forum, I've gotten answers including T-10, T-9, T-8, and 3/32. I wasn't really surprised to have a loose pivot on a cheapy Native, but this is pretty bad quality control/consistancy for triple the cost IMHO. I'm hearing impaired and still waiting for their CS to answer my email though. Will post back on how they handle it, and/or whether or not they can tell me what size/type these pivot heads are SUPPOSED to be.

Received a 1-line response:

"Please allow 1-2 weeks for delivery of your parts"

Assuming an undamaged pivot screw & pin arrive I have to say I'm impressed. No hassle about voiding the warranty or sending the knife in, etc. Will post back with info regarding the size/type heads on the new parts when they arrive.

I received a brand new pivot assembly for my Yojimbo via USPS yesterday, looking like T-8 torx heads on both sides (waiting for smaller torx wrenches to arrive so I'm not sure, but it's not T-10)

Very pleased with Spyderco's customer service
