Yosemite National Park

My last few weeks have gone like this. About three weeks ago I went to see a band play in Arizona, and hike in the Mojave Desert. Once I got back from that trip I had about 6 hours to get ready (and go to the airport) for my upcoming week in Alabama where I would be in the woods for about 5 days. Fresh back from Alabama, last Saturday, my plane landed in LA just to be met by my friend, Amir. We were supposed to hike the Grand Canyon but the plans changed while I was flying back. To my surprise we went straight to Yosemite to hike up to Half Dome. Here are the pictures from the 2 days we were there. Enjoy!

Some of those photos are NatGeo quality! Great job on those, thanks for posting them. Color me envious.

Great pics! Yeah, you hit the time of the year where there is still a lot of snow melting so that leads to a lot of flooding. Looks like you had a great time, only to have your travel schedule!!! Yosemite is a very beautiful place, just like Yellowstone.

Man, life looks terrible for you brother! I bet when you were in AL, Jeff made you go out with all his hot chicks too! The horror! :D

Great pictures Reub. I need to go back to Yosemite as an adult. I went there once as a kid and don't remember anything about it. Looks awesome.

Damn great pictures, makes me want to make up a reason to go to California and get back there. My wife and got to spent a day there 10 years ago when she was traveling for work. I'd like to take my boy when he's a little older.

Thanks for sharing,

Mike

Anyone wanting to go to Yosemite and do a dayhike this coming Tuesday, let me know. I will be going back to do a hike up Yosemite Falls.

Bearthedog - If I'm reading your EXIF properly you've got a 7D (jealous). How do you take hiking with the weight of the camera body and what lens(es) do you pack?

I'm trying to combine my love of photography with my new found appreciation of camping and (eventually with more experience) hiking in the great outdoors. But the weight of all that gear has to drag you down after some miles surely?

Handofcod,
I usually hike with a Canon G-10 or a smaller Canon 1100, but in a place like Yosemite, you got to go for quality. We did about 16 miles (some of it was running in the snow) that weekend and I didn't like the weight but it was worth it. As for the lenses, I use a Tamron 18mm-270mm F/3.5. It is my one lens do all. I got a Sigma 10mm-20mm super wide angle that keeps a constant F/3.5 through the entire focal range. Sigma 50mm 1:1 macro (after using Jeff's for 3 days) and it is light for a dedicated macro. Usually on a hike, I take one lens for the 7D.

I am a bit of a super ultralight backpacker so the extra weight of a decent camera is worth it, especially if I am doing a story.
