You call that a knife? Now, this is a knife....

I bought the 12 inch Sirupati from "mamav" (Gin), and while talking to her about it, we both had call to refer to it as a small knife. To which she said that only people that deal with HI Khukuris would call a 12 inch knife small!

Which got me to looking at some of my other blades, and to be honest, even a lot of my custom fixed blades, like bowies and tantos, are pretty small in comparison. It isn't until I start into my swords, like the sabres and katana, that the blades become definitively larger. Even some of my tomahawks look tiny compared to my 20 inch Ang Khola!

It just seems sorta funny that I find my 18 to 19 inch Sirupatis and Kobras to be really comfortable and useful knives :D Of course, now that I got the Cherokee Rose, everything is gonna get skewed again.

Is it just me, or was I brought up wrong?

DD if you were brought up wrong then methinks most, if not all, of us here are in the same boat. Whatever the case may be I think we're all comfortable with it.:D ;)

So does the above reference to the Cherokee Rose mean you like the design or are you still undecided on it?
Not many people have seen a Bowie this size in person, most are only familiar with them in pictures.:D ;)

Yvsa,

I am still undecided on how to approach the Rose. I honestly like the looks and design, but I have really never used a Bowie as a tool, though I know that historically they were. The other Bowies I own are really more general purpose camp knives and fighters.

Actually, being of Filipino extraction, my idea of a work knife has always been a bolo, hence my attraction and fascination with Khukuris. My favorite Khukuri for the last two years has been an 18 inch Ganga Ram by Kumar, so the Rose is still in the "learning and education" stage.

However, it does move and balance nicely in the hand, and I like the sound it makes as it cuts through the air, a little like a Katana when you make the move just right!

However, about that scabbard...... :barf:

Yes about, "that scabbard.:barf: " actually a "sheath" because it doesn't have anything hard enclosing the blade to protect the user from penetration by the blade.
I designed an intricate cardboard model and had the knife firmly ensconced in it when I sent it too Bill. I don't know if it was lost in Nepal, whether it didn't get too the sarki, or what happened to it.
The sheath was designed straight all the way down to the clip point and had a ring glued around the top to keep a frog from sliding past. I designed it that way so the frog could be slid off and turned around so that it could be slipped on the opposite way to easily make it a left handed rig.
Obviously we didn't get it.:grumpy: :(

DD it just so happens that the 18" Ganga Ram or BGRS is also my favorite.:D
I always thought my 18" AK that was the 2nd khuk I bought would be my favorite but I was sadly/gladly mistaken.;)
Everything about the BGRS from its very nice pancake flat scabbard to its well shaped blade is perfect IMO!
However that may change when we get the special run of 17" Foxy Follys in. That is if they're made exactly too our specs.
I love the full size Foxy Folly but it is just too heavy for long term comfortable use.:(
Everything about the Foxy Folly is what I think a khukuri should be and look like! Getting it in a smaller lighter, 24 to 28 ounce, size should make it ideal or at least nearly so!!!!
It's getting closer and closer to the time when it can be ordered. Bill said it would be better for him if we waited until after Christmas so waiting we are, not very patiently in my case though.;)

Too bad about your sheath design, Yvsa.

Still, you gave us the Rose and the Special, and helped on the FF.

Not bad for a busted down Old Son in OK, not rich or famous but well loved.

the doc says it sounds like a severe case of iron deficiency in y'alls upbringin', take two khukri's and call him in the mornin.

It is interesting how our perspectives change with time and experience.
I used to think that my CS Trailmaster was a large knife. Now it seems like a nice mid sized carry piece. Something to be carried when I can't carry a real sized knife. Even my 15" Sirupate seems sort of on the small side now adays. The smallest khuks that I have get around the house chores, but when it is time to go to the brush, so to speak the duty goes to something between 17 an 18 inches usually. A YCS or 18" AK are the usual picks. Oh well, I guess I am spoiled. :p

BTW, Seth Cute little Battle Mistress you have there. Is that a variant? Interesting E handle shape.

I remember pulling my first ka-bar out of its box and thinking that it must be approaching the short-sword size classification. Then came khukuris.

Not to mention the more severe "Kukri Intensive Deprivation Syndrome."   ;)

its a military over run (the battle mistress), called the "terror monkey" after an israeli rapelling special forces unit.

you could make 4 out of the ang khola. 3/16 vs. half inch... still wish i could get one in 3/4" though...

there was a time when i though the battle mistress was really big... now i figure that the only blade that is truly "big" is the one you cant physically pick up... and after that, once mech units come into play - the sky is the limit :D

I used to post sometimes on the Camillus forum about BK&T. Good knives, I guess. I read the reviews, comparing their breaking points to those of other "tactical" knives. They always compared well.

Then I found the Chiruwa AK's guarantee about bend or break and get 2 free.

I never looked back.

Let's hear it for Khuks!! :D
