You can dye scales, how about bleaching them.

Hi all,
Iv'e seen some handle scales that have been dyed using rit fabric dye. Has anyone ever tried to bleach black scales and then dye them? A quick search turned up nothing. I imagine it would depend on the handle material. The two knives i'm looking to do this to are in frn, and G-10. My main worry is that it would affect the structural integrity of the scales. If no one knows i will probably give it a try and get back to you guys with pics.

I do not think bleach will permanently affect G10 but , then I've never tried it either :D

I do not think you could bleach out more than the surface.

It would be all based on the chemical resistance on the material. You may need to find out what material your G10 scales are made with, then find out the chemical resistance of that.

Neither will bleach, I bet. If you use straight bleach, and soak them, I doubt they would turn lighter, but it sure as hell could melt them!

One of the big selling points for G-10 is resistance to chemicals. I'd imagine that quality would play into trying to bleach it; don't think it'd penetrate very deep. This topic has come up before, I think, and I seem to recall the color itself is chemically integral to the resin used in making it (meaning it's through-and-through). If bleach has any effect at all, I'd think it'd only be at the very surface (might fade a bit, if anything). I think FRN is integrally colored the same way (via the resin/poly in the nylon). I've seen some posts (in the Spyderco forum, I think) about some people surface-dying the WHITE frn to some darker color, but don't know if bleaching would do the opposite, other than maybe fading it slightly.
