you can only have one blade profile?

The best blade profile really depends on how you use the knife. For the EDC of a small foler most users have the clip-point or drop-point blade style. It is long enough and pointy enough that it does just about every knife task the user would need a knife for.

As DGG said it really depends on what you are using the knife for. If you are using it to cut open boxes or to do fine cutting with the tip of the blade I would definiteley say a wharncliffe blade. When it comes to skinning an animal it would be a drop point or clip point because they have alot of belly. If you want to stab with the knife the best it probably a spear point or tanto because of its reinforced tip strength. This is a hard question to answer because its all relative to what you are doing, but I personally like a nice drop point or a nice wharncliffe.

I refuse to answer any of your threads unless you post some comments of your own. You have 3 threads open asking for people's views without expressing your own thoughts on the subject matter.

what would be the most pragmatic blade profile, and why?

In terms of broad practical application, something like a Howling Rat for a small blade does very well. The blade width, thickness, edge curvature and point formation are all so balanced to do well for many tasks and poorly at few. In general when you highly specialize such as using a very deep clip point you are choosing to optomize for one aspect to the near exclusion of others. This of course still be a very practical blade shape if you only do those things. This is why for example a carpenter and an electrician will have two very different blades even if both have a pure pragmatic selection. Joe Talmadge has a nice writeup on the common blade shapes and their main purpose.

you are right. i should share my views on my threads!with my limited knowledge at my finger tips i would have to say the mighty drop point seems to be winner all things concidered.most designs now a days dont seem to improve upon the more common profiles we have grown up with; imho.
