I was really bummed. I had planned and saved for a year on getting a really nice rifle set up the way I wanted. I had several final contenders in the running for the right gun. Some medical issues came up and the money I had hoped to use had to go to other things. So I was resigned that this was another year that I won't be deer hunting. Lo and behold, the state of CT in a surprise to me, just changed the law to allow hunters in CT to hunt deer with a handgun on private land. I have had a Ruger Super Blackhawk for thirty something years waiting to do deer and bear hunting with it. Not only do I have the "right" gun and years of silhouette and target practice with it, but, my wife's cousin is an avid hunter with 110 acres he is going to let me hunt on. I just spend several hours with him on our ATV's going around his property with him showing me the stands he has set up and areas the deer move through. I haven't been this excited about doing something in a long time. I know it likely I won't even get a shot, but at 53, this is one of the most exciting things I have been able to do in long time. The other cool part is that I do have enough money to purchase a black powder rifle to extend my season on private land as well. I just had to share with people that might understand my excitement.
