I was really bummed. I had planned and saved for a year on getting a really nice rifle set up the way I wanted. I had several final contenders in the running for the right gun. Some medical issues came up and the money I had hoped to use had to go to other things. So I was resigned that this was another year that I won't be deer hunting. Lo and behold, the state of CT in a surprise to me, just changed the law to allow hunters in CT to hunt deer with a handgun on private land. I have had a Ruger Super Blackhawk for thirty something years waiting to do deer and bear hunting with it. Not only do I have the "right" gun and years of silhouette and target practice with it, but, my wife's cousin is an avid hunter with 110 acres he is going to let me hunt on. I just spend several hours with him on our ATV's going around his property with him showing me the stands he has set up and areas the deer move through. I haven't been this excited about doing something in a long time. I know it likely I won't even get a shot, but at 53, this is one of the most exciting things I have been able to do in long time. The other cool part is that I do have enough money to purchase a black powder rifle to extend my season on private land as well. I just had to share with people that might understand my excitement.

Kr1, AWESOME, I know exactly what your feeling and its great. I hope you get a few shots and have a great season. Keep us posted buddy and I've seen a deer or two killed with a pistol before it can be done.

congrats!
I got the BP rifle this year, but wasn't able to go out during the early season because of work and a trip in the middle of the 10 days.
Rifle season is in Dec, though - so I have plenty of time to sight in the scope.

not sure what you're looking for in a rifle, but you might check out the Stevens 200 series.
no frills, but pretty nice and can be found new for under $300.

kr good for you, i love the big rugers, i've had all of them : contenders, colts, rugers, sW 29s. rugers in the hot loads always feel better in hand & will shoot with the best of them. packers are well advised the simple mechanics of the single action will never let them down. however saying that i never had trouble with any smiths & put about 15000 rds thru a belgium hi-power with no jams.but the ruger blackhawk in 7 --7.5 in. is the deer hunting pinnacle. iron sights are great out to 65 yds for me but guys & girls with good eyes can hit at 100 easily. the best of luck to you.

Thanks for the good words guys. I love the Ruger. I can shoot that all day. I liked the S&W 29 but after 20 rounds the web of my hand was so sore that it wasn't fun to shoot.

I am currently looking at the CVA Optima in stainless for my black powder rifle. I liked the construction of CVA's stuff in the past and from what I hear it still is quality and good shooting.

I'll be getting to the range as soon as possible to recheck sights etc. Its been a year since I used the Ruger teaching my boys how to shoot it.

I know what you mean about the eyes. Several years ago I wouldn't have hesitated to take a shot at a deer at 100 yards with all things being right. You know, standing totally still, broadside for a full minute, looking at me, smiling. Like in the ads :D . Now, with iron sights, 75 would likely be the limit, if the light is good and god is in his heaven etc. More likely 50 otherwise.

Those silhouette matches will do well for you as it really builds confidence. I always used the same load for everything ,the no longer made Speer 225 gr .Deer don't need anything more than a 240 .Have fun !!

I shoot the Leverlution rounds through my .44 mag redhawk. They are nice and accurate. Maybe you can save for a nice 4x scope for that blackhawk and be good out to 100 yards, like in the days when our eyes were good. :-)
