You can't use that to clean horses hooves!

Almost ten years ago, I bought a couple of marlinspikes, no name, bare bones, metal handles. Just a sheepsfoot blade and a spike. Well, I bought these for my sisters, and one for my father. Was going to give them at birthdays. Well, I had never seen a marlinspike before, I thought they were for cleaning horses hooves:D ! Well, I gave one to my father for his birthday, and proudly asked if that was a good knife for cleaning horses hooves. After his good belly laugh was done, he explained what the spike was for, why the sheepsfoot blade was designed as such, and I told him that I had two more for my sisters. Well, he said, your uncles would like those, and with Fathers day coming, you should give the other knives to them. Well, I did, and they were pleased, my uncle still uses his on his sportfisherman. Drydock, out fishing or just on the pier, he still uses it and whenever he sees me, thanks me for it. He has done a lot for me, same as my other uncle, who is my Godfather, and my father.

My father had made mention that my uncles marlinspike is in pretty bad shape. I was thinking, where could I go to get some marlinspikes? Camillus is out of business, their jigged bone model was junk, but their green one wasn't bad. I much prefer Bucks 315 delrin model, had one, and got rid of it  . I haven't even looked on flea Bay, but I would like to get each of them a well made marlinspike that will take abuse. Right now, I have a Spencer marlinspike, WW2 British Navy surplus, that I took a half cup of cosmoline off of ;) . Anyway, I'm thinking about getting these, although they are not as easily opened as the Camillus and Buck models were.

Anybody seen any marlinspike models from other companies? I seem to remember Colonial having some. I really like AG Russels marlinspike, but I don't have enough to get one for myself, let alone three.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I think the only one I have is made by E.J. Coles (a German company) that I got when I worked at the old Abercrombie & Fitch in NYC back in the mid 70's. I once read an article in Knife World (I forget the author) that gave the history of those Coles' knives.

If you like SAKs they make a couple, including the Firstmate.

And one called the Sailor that is a little more minimal. The Skipper has a marlin spike/shackle opener on it...

I don't know if they fit the bill, but I love my Skipper. Felinevet has them all.

shs,

try marine supply stores like west marine, tackle shops, etc. I got one when I worked at west marine (my only stint in retail, lasted 3 months there till I found work at sea :D) and its a decent knife. stainless handle, blade, and spike. I know that Yankee Tackle in Gloucester had a buck and a camillus on display, so some places still have the more traditional looking ones kicking around.
