I’m always amazed at how well my Ontario RAT 1 rides in the pocket. For a big folder, I find it very manageable to EDC. The slight directional-biased texture on the Nylon 6 scales allows the knife to slip in and out without chewing up my jeans. The clip is very decent and keeps a low profile; I have it positioned for tip-down carry (I usually opt for tip-up) which allows the knife to ride a little deeper in the pocket. When clipped, my RAT stays securely out of the way whenever I reach in for my keys, coins, or whatever else I may have pocketed.

Now, I’m an office guy so I usually don’t carry a large blade, but today is a day off; a perfect day to give my RAT a little pocket-time (much to my Spydercos’ chagrin.) It’s given me an opportunity to re-appreciate a folder so common that I have taken it for granted—it’s nutnspecial. I briefly considered duracoating it, scratching my name and “1 of 1” on the blade, signing it with a magic marker, and selling it to myself for $100, but this was only a passing fancy. I like my RAT just the way it is… plain-edged in a satin finish.

What’s the deal with *your* Ontario RAT 1? Do you EDC it? Have you done any modifications to it? Share your story! :)

I keep my satin PE stock and I'm delighted with it just the way it is. The RAT 1 folder is one of the best knife values in knifedom today!

I rotate my Rat-1 folder into my work schedule, usually carry and use it daily for a two week stretch. I haven't done anything to it other than an occasional stropping. The more you use this knife the smoother it seems to get. At 5 oz, it's about borderline for the weight I like to carry. I show it no respect at work and it has never let me down.

Love the ergos on this high value blade. Love satin blade unserrated but not the scales. I wish there was some entrepreneurial company that made custom scales a reasonable prices for high volume folders like this.

I got several when I first saw them, I thought the price was wrong. I gave all but one away as presents and like the one I kept very much. As others have said, it's a lot of knife for the money. I have used mine a lot as a work knife and have never had any issues. I did get the black coated blades and it shows signs of wear, but so what if it does. I also like the open back design, very easy to clean.

I want a couple of these badly but everyone seems to be out of the satin plain blades.

I had several RAT 1 knives and I ended up giving them all away.

That is not to say that I didn't like them though. In fact I liked them so much I thought they would make perfect affordable gifts. I like knowing that my friends/ family have decent knives at their disposal.

If I had the money, I would buy one for every person I know.:p

Cheers to the RAT-1:thumbup:

A little heavy, but a tough son of a gun. Not the fastest blade deployment, but good enough. Great value.

Very nice review. I enjoyed reading it. I could swear you were talking about my Darrel Ralph "Madd Maxx".

Hmm, mine flies open with a shove of my thumb

I tweaked mine to make it better, but it won't fly open as fast as I'd like. Not a big deal. I'll have to get another [in satin this time] to investigate the QC further. At $29 shipped, you can't go wrong.

My only objection is that the lock is harder than I would like. However, it has improved some. I don't know whether it is easier or I have learned to use it better.
Overall I think it is an excellent value.

Regards,
Jerry

It's my car knife.
I have nicer knives to carry, but I want a good one in my car too.

I personally like the painted blade because it shows wear I like my work knife to have battle scars just like I like rust stains on a carbon blade
