I just had a bit of a "wake-up call". I was over at a friend's place. While I was there, I was showing another friend -- and fellow martial artist/weapons enthusiast -- the knife I was carrying. It happened to be my Gerber Covert for a change; I usually carry a CRKT Sampson KISS. The Covert is not my best knife, but it usually "wows" non-knife people with it's stilleto look.
My other friend, whose place we were at, then joined in the knife "show and tell" by taking out his two year old, economy Kershaw liner-lock. You know, the AUS-6A bladed one with the silver aluminum handles and black Kraton inserts.
Well, I must admit that the cheap Kershaw embarassed my more expensive Covert. The Kershaw had a wicked double action opening, and the liner was twice as thick with a lock-up so secure that it doesn't even need any Lake/Walker safety. My Covert's lazy, swing opening with a locking "click", was deafened by the "Ka-thunk" of the cheaper Kershaw.
It made me rethink what I buy, and why I buy.
It also made me realize that a properly made liner-lock with a good thick leaf will not become obsolete in the face of Axis locks.
What a revelation it was.
