I just had a bit of a "wake-up call". I was over at a friend's place. While I was there, I was showing another friend -- and fellow martial artist/weapons enthusiast -- the knife I was carrying. It happened to be my Gerber Covert for a change; I usually carry a CRKT Sampson KISS. The Covert is not my best knife, but it usually "wows" non-knife people with it's stilleto look.

My other friend, whose place we were at, then joined in the knife "show and tell" by taking out his two year old, economy Kershaw liner-lock. You know, the AUS-6A bladed one with the silver aluminum handles and black Kraton inserts.

Well, I must admit that the cheap Kershaw embarassed my more expensive Covert. The Kershaw had a wicked double action opening, and the liner was twice as thick with a lock-up so secure that it doesn't even need any Lake/Walker safety. My Covert's lazy, swing opening with a locking "click", was deafened by the "Ka-thunk" of the cheaper Kershaw.

It made me rethink what I buy, and why I buy.

It also made me realize that a properly made liner-lock with a good thick leaf will not become obsolete in the face of Axis locks.

What a revelation it was.

I've seen these knives sell for $25.00 on ebay. Someone I know paid $80.00 for it at a shop specializing in knives, not so special. I have'nt had the heart to tell him yet, it's been 2yrs now to bad he does'nt come to the blade forums.
Keep on educating, it only benifits everyone.

I actually think the Covert is a decent knife. The linerlock in mine works fine without the LAWKS, though I prefer to have that feature especially when it engages naturally in a saber grip. The clip is well designed for a low carry, unobtrusive tip down carry and can easily be set up for left and right carry. I carry it left for a backup.

The "ka-thunk" you hear in the kershaw is the reverberation through the cheap hollow aluminum handle. A loud sound does not a good knife make.

I think most of the CRKT line-up qualifies for the "Getting more than you paid for" award

Another example of real vs. perceived value.
Not knocking the Covert- it's not the best knife ever, but not the worst either. However, Kershaw does make a pretty good knife...
It's interesting the results you get when comparing apples:apples, apples

A buddy bot a kershaw and that double action your talking about is because the damn thing has a back spring which has to be cleared. I don;t think that set up belongs on a liner lock. It prevents a smooth even continuous opening.

I have handled each of them briefly. The Kershaw is a nice knife for the price, but the opening is weird, though I admit I like the sound. The thin liner of the Covert is weak, and I've heard many complaints about the Covert's liner lock, however it still is a fairly decent working knife. I especially like how you can sharpen the false edge.

Absolutely correct Chang.

The Covert is a fun knife. Extremely quick to snap out. I've even seen cheap knock-offs of Coverts so it does have a following.

It is two years old, however, and no longer worth the $100+ that some knife stores sell them for.

There is a surprise around every corner. I have a lot of knives that I paid $$$$ for and then wonder, "What the hell was I thinking". Then I run across brands like CRKT and those less expensive Kershaws. As a collector they will never be worth as much as others but they have one hell of a bang for the buck. Just look around the forums, guys are talking about their new Mel Pardue custom creation and the CRKT Point Guard in the same sentence! That was unheard of just a year ago when I started checking out the forums.
There are Kershaw Talons selling on eBay for under $30. I just bought a Large CRKT KFF new for $29.50! The deals are out there you just have to have an open mindset.

BTW, does anyone here have any warranty service experience from Gerber? My friend's brother's Gerber Covert (black coated) got wrecked in a motorcycle accident. The knife flew out of his pocket and hit the road and I think the liner and the scale were cracked.
