OK maybe this sounds dumb, but I was looking around and trying to find something for a handle for my new bowie that I'm making. Well low and behold, I went to home depot, what did I spy with my little eye?

Composit decking:):barf: Well I went up to the front of the store and, well lookie here FREE samples. I took 5 samples home of diff colors and started making handles tonight, this stuff looks great and is very nice to work with. I will take some pics and send them to some one if they will post them up here, I dont have an image host yet.

Yes when I walk my ass squeeks:)

This I gotta see.
I bought some wood flooring at Cost Less Carpet the other day for handles. Ever heard of Katmon? Cool patterned wood

HEHEHE....The true essence of a knifemaker.

I bought a hardwood rolling pin [for baking] at the dollar store. Unbelievable grain. Will get about 5 handles for a buck [plus tax].

[He's still got us beat, Bruce, his was free!!!!]

I work at a lumber yard and just the other day I took home some trex decking scraps we had and cut them into slabs. I wasn't sure how it would work but it sanded easy and looked pretty good. I haven't figured out if a finish should be applied or if they should be left natural.
God bless,

Becareful working that stuff.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I believe the materials used are toxic.
please do research before going any farther with this stuff.

Now I just need to get some allen head screws, and make about 4 more knives before I send them off for heat treat.

Try putting some oil on a bit of scrap wood and see what happens. might chance the looks a lot.

Looks Like I'll be making a trip to Home Depot to try some of this stuff out...Looks Good. I like the Dollar store too.

Interesting. How durable is the stuff if you drop it or whatever? I'm assuming it's pretty stable (shrinkage wise). ?

Once in an antique shop I found an abolone shell with a really vivid pattern, no worm holes, big enough for a couple small folders, for 5 bucks. It was being sold as an ashtray. Also, since I make miniatures, I have bought some mother of pearl buttons for a few cents at such places. I only need a small piece of mother of pearl for a mini handle of course, but it's very hard to find some with a lot fire and pattern in them on such a small scale. Most normal pieces would just be plain white when cut into a handle slab the size of an aspirin tablet. Seems like there's more quality in those older pieces...

I'm going to do some testing on it when it STOPS RAINING:( damn Washington Weather. oh well.

I got about 10 ft of the stuff last night at my bro's father inlaws place:) I will pour oil on it and burn it and blow it up, if I can arange it I will nuke it from orbit to see if it last's:cool: It seems kinda soft at first, very easy to cut and grind on a 40 grit belt. or with a file. I guess its really compressed plastic chips? I'll give it a go any how.

I went to 2 stores. The first had no samples. The second had 2 pieces. I told him I wanted to check the colors to see what works for a future deck. As I left he said he needed them back as they were the only ones he had %#@$#$. Maybe I'll take them back tomorrow????????

Must have been a small store, but the decking companys give them a box of them to give out for FREE as samples. I wouldnt give them back unless its a small ma and pop store that you go to offten and would cause trouble. All they have to do is call the company and they will send them more.

If you are still wanting some I bet if you called any of the decking companys that sell the stuff they would be more than happy to send you some samples:) They prob have more than the grey and red for colors too.

stop by a flooring show room and get some samples. I ended up with a piece or bamboo flooring. It looks pretty nice. I think the darker stuff looks better.

Stop by a large lumber yard and they should have some off fall scraps they'll give you. Don't go to a lowes or home depot. Try a lumber yard for contractors. They do a lot of cutting on site for customers.
We have scraps laying around quite often.
As for working the stuff, I read up on the trex brand we carry. As far as I can tell everything in it is rated non toxic. It's basically wood shavings and glue. But I wear a respirator just to be safe.

The stuff you got may be dif then the stuff I found, the stuff I have seems like its plastic chips not wood.
