I've got a strange new sickness that they don't have a shot for. The need to know more about knife making has consumed me. I'm very new to knife making. Never made one. Some kits are in the mail. I have started reading a couple books and more are on the way but I have a few questions that haven't been answered yet by the books and I need to know now so I won't feel so sick (maybe). I understand what a forge is, kind of. it is a fire that gets medal hot enough to pound it into shape? it seems more complicated that that, why? do frged pieces of medal need to be H/T, if so do you do that in a forge? I hope I am not bothering anyone with my impatience but I'm sick.:barf:

you got lots of reading ahead of you, Matt...:D

Forging is only one way of making a blade. Another is stock removal. Even another is casting molds (dendritic, etc.)

If you've got room for a small gas forge - go for it. Otherwise, stick to stock removal first. (backwards of how they did it in the old days)

You gotta eat the dust to be a "true believer"...

Trial by Dust!

:D

OK, I'll relax. When I get off work I'll be setting up my humble lil work area (not shop) and be grinding what ever medal I can find by tomorrow night.

Be prepared to wake up in the morning and blow black snot into kleenex...Ahhh, the joys of steel:D

Where are you at? I'm sure there's a maker in the area that would be happy to help you out.

Buy a GOOD respirator and wear it all the time, of course. :)
