So, today I was out in the woods and harvested some fat pine. I came home and processed some.

Then for practice I tried my ferro rod fire skills...
I tell you, "Iawoodsman" really helped me alot. That "shaving" idea may be common knowledge to most, but I never picked up on it... By holding the blade 90 degrees to the wood you can scrap a VERY fine saw dust mix. That combined with a few fat pie feather sticks... and...

Im getting better!

Good job with the knife skills !! Good 'ole Mora (510 I think ) comes through again !

I THINK that one is a 521. (I get confused). The 511 has the finger stud, the 521 is a little wider blade.

LOL on the table to the left is sitting about 185.00 worth of knife... and there is only 2 of them. I'm really in a Mora mood lately. I think that one cost under 10.00 from Bens Backwoods LOL.

Here is a picture harvesting the pine. (Rare snow in Ga).

I got the same Estwing also, but I modded mine by taking the laquer off the handle , and shaving about 1/2 pound off the top of the head. (oops, thread drift !)

Yup, holding the knife 90 to the wood and scraping works effectively for the fine stuff, and then switch to slicing off fine sticks when it gets going. My fatwood pile is getting small, so time to go scouting for more soon. I always pack the Mora as back-up. ( I shaved most of the guard off of mine.

Nice job...I love that MOra. I just got into a 510, and I am wondering why I have so much money tied up in other knives?! Great job on the fire...when I was in Georgia, it was pretty cold (1995-96, Ft Benning). I also remember digging there was like digging in a beach! Sand filled with water...atleast on the west end.

Nice job! I need to order a Mora so I'll know what I really think about the scandi grind...just not sure which one yet. I'm really not into red woods tools.

Moras are great bush tools. They come super sharp, with a little work on a stone you can make it a true scandi. Great stuff.
