I recently had some concerns regarding the quality of my edges, and all of the wonderful people here convinced me that freehand sharpening can produce extremely attractive edges with the right amount of refinement. I was too stuck up on setting a "perfect" bevel, so I never really refined an edge enough to see what I could actually produce. I finally bought a cheap strop and some compound, and here is my first attempt at a refined edge:

As you can see it is still a little cloudy. I must admit I skipped a step or three in my excitement to try the strop :o What do you guys think?

Looking good man! I learn something new every time I sharpen. It really is a hobby all its own. ;)

Good work bpeezer; is that a Cryo?... Also, can you elaborate on what the process was that you followed as well as what you used?

Thanks,
Czech

Sure thing Czech, I'll do my best. Here's everything I used:

220 grit cheapo sandpaper, 1k chosera stone, 3k chosera stone, 8" bench strop with .5 micron paste

Step 1: Straighten out the edge, remove very slight recurve. 220 grit sandpaper to get rid of the little horn at the bottom of the blade to eliminate the recurve. Please excuse the excessive loading on the sandpaper now

Step 2: Reprofile edge to put on more acceptable bevel. At the time, all I had to work with was my 1k stone so I reprofiled the edge with that. It was a bit of a pain, but helped me get used to the blade

Step 3: Begin refining edge. Moved on to the 3k stone, refined the scratch pattern on the bevel a little and honed the edge.

Step 4: Skip other refinement, go straight to .5 micron paste on the strop. In case you can't tell yet, I have been working with pretty limited materials. Once again, this was a bit of a pain. Since I was going straight from 3k to .5 micron, I spent a lot of time polishing out the scratches. This is (probably) why my edge is still pretty cloudy. Also excuse the appearance of my strop at the moment :o

To answer your first question, yes it is a Cryo! Does this help?
