Finally bought a DMT Aligner sharpener . Been useing a sharpmaker for many years while it worked fine these stones are awesome . Wanted something to realine some edges on some older well used blades this will definitly do the the job Thanks guys ! Only thing i dont get is all this stuff supposed to fit in the case ? Or just the stones .

So the Aligner is much easier to reprofile an edge than the sharpmaker? Even with the diamond stones? I have gotten a little frustrated trying to put a smaller angle on some of my knives with the Sharpmaker.

You can use the Aligner several different ways. You can use it as DMT suggests, using their stones in the holder with the rods. You can use other stones in the holder. You can wrap polishing film around the DMT stones in the holder. And you can use the Aligner without the DMT stones, using sandpapers of differing grits, or thin leather for stropping. Just set the Aligner's guide off to the side of the paper so as not to wear it away. I also took some plastic fishtank airhose tubing, split it, and wraped it around the end of the Aligner clamp just to give it a bit more protection if I slip up when using the sandpaper.

Colin8 its alot easier to reprofile an edge than a sharpmaker you have seven differant angles you can set it at . And it eats the steel up alot faster than ceramic ever could all the years i spent using my sharpmaker could of saved a lot of time gonna get the ceramic stone for the DMT to really polish up the edges next . STITCHAWL have you ever used blocksandpaper so you wouldnt have to wrap the stones . Like useing a benchstone just wondering if that would work .

The aligner works very well with benchstones.

Skip the ceramic stone and get the XX-fine diamond, the ceramic does not work that well.

Does the Aligner work with the Diafold sharpeners? I have heard that they don't, but I'm not really sure.

Yes and no. DMT makes the Magna Guide sharpener for use with the Diafolds. The only difference is that the rod that come with the Magna Guide is made especially for the Diafold stones. The plastic body is exactly the same. I'm sure DMT sells the Magna Guide rod separately or as a replacement.
