You know this sword doesn't look half bad

Look at what happens when you take some liberties with the AK Bowie. This one would weight about twice as much. We end up with a short sword that can skin an apple and still hit with the force of a mace.

Blade: 18" length
Stock: 7/16"
Handle: 12" (single or double handed)
Length OA: 30"
Modifications:
- Simple Cross Guard
- Add Brass pommel caps to exposed tang - around blue dot.
(for better balance)

So how many should we make? :D :p ;)

I would buy one ;) It would be a mammoth to swing if it was built like the HI khuks. It sure would be fun!!!

Uncle,

It could be much worst. Imagine a stretched limo from Texas. :)

Yup, it turns into a pretty good looking falchion. A little heavy to swing single handed, but it should move very well double handed. It puts to use some of the over engineered features of the Bowie, and while not as strong it would still be very hard to break.

We have seen machetes and bush swords, and now we have a tree sword. The forest will never rest easily again. :)

Uncle,

Put me down for one (two if we can make them for a reasonable price)if you want to produce it.

The trick will be to keep the blade and handle width at their present dimensions. There is little to gain by increasing the size of either. No matter how strong the tang the weak link in the system is still going to be the bones in your arm(s). The present tang (about 3/8x1" cross section) should be more than strong enough, and certainly stronger than any sword I have ever heard of.

The point is equally interesting. Since the fullers and point grind is extended the weight of the blade will naturally be reduced towards the point. This should feel pretty good in hand and provide excellent penetration performance. Better than we can get on the current bowie. Yet, the cutting edge retains all of the strength we have come to expect from the AK bowie.

So when do we take delivery. :)

I can already see Cliff Stamp working himself to exhaution while trying to kill off one of these swords. He would just start hacking away in some Canadian outback and end up clearing a new airport runway, before this thing failed.

 :) ;)

Can you make a wood model?

Hi Uncle,

Unfortunately not. I love the way the HI Bowie currently looks and I doubt I can do the model justice.

If you look closley at the posted picture you will see that I have eliminated the CHO and added a simple guard. With the longer length comes greater velocity and leverage so I removed the cho to reduce a potential stress riser. I then added a guard to serve as an added leverage point for the forward hand. It becomes something solid to push hard against when driving the point during a thrust.

I envisioned a simple oval guard about 3" high by 1.5" wide and 1/4" thick - either sodered or pinned in place.

I'm sort of skeptical about the 7/16" blade stock spec...while it would make it far stronger than any sword I've handled or collected to date (I'm primarily a sword collector), it would also make it much heavier and less agile. It would almost be a Nepalese version of the European falchion, except a bit shorter and a lot heavier.

Remember, the kamis are gonna be making these, and we all know what their design philosophy is on weapons - the thicker/heavier/stronger it is, the better.

Uncle, I would like to buy one of these if you decide to make some, but like Mott I would want a 8 or 9 inch handle.
I'm glad you posted the message about the shopping site being down, I thought I wore it out trying to decide which knife to buy next.

Keith,

If you measure the handle you will see that the actual horn griping area measures about 9.5" in length.* The balance of the length is used for the pommel (~2") and the front guard (1/4"). Strange how that kind of works out.... :p

* when you measure remember that the OAL = 30"

The traditional European two handed sword had a blade that was much thinner, but, it was also twice as long. This one might feel alot better than we suspect. It's just the thing to have in the woods in case you run into Tree Beard and his herd (character from Tolkien's Lord of the Ring). :)
