Is that a wasps nest!?!? Explanation porfavore...[/quote
They are known as paper hornets in this area. They are large, black and will attack in numbers when they take a notion. They are also carnivores. This is not the largest one I have seen but it is the most intricate. To me they show a real artistry in their design and construction. Fred

You know what the redneck solution for that is?
It even uses most of the basics-
Duct tape a quart jar on the end of a tree trimming pole and use it to dump gasonline on the nest.
Then shove a paper towel in the jar, light it, and use that to light the nest.
Worked like a charm on a nest that showed up in a tree out in the front yard. Results may vary when its on your house  :D

Its really amazing how fast those nests show up. They usually are that big before you ever know whats happening:eek:

They built a nest on the window of my garage and from the inside I could look into the inside of the nest ,really neat !!

Fred,
That thing has some interesting contours. Do you think it is possible to get them hornets to re-locate to somewhere else and then you could carve the nest up, soak it in some epoxy and turn it into "stabilized creation of hornet" handle material.:D
Just a thought.

Mike

I bookmarked those for future reference. Thanks Fitzo

 The guy across the road has dibs on it. You know poor lives right down the road when a hornets nest is a hot item. Fred

I know a guy who's big into muzzle loading rifles, and a couple of his buddies try to get ahold of any paper nests they can. They claim they were used as wadding way back when, and want to be period correct. Not sure how much truth there is to that though.

Watch it though Fred, these guys are not single shooters like bees, they have full clips!

Fred, Hope your charging them rent. What happens when you turn the light on? We got several different types around here. I stumbled into some ground dweller's shortly after the fire while I was checking my cattle fence. Guess I was trespassing. They sure let me know about it.

Back when I was about 14 (13 years ago) there was a snippet I read about a maker that took honey-comb and basically drowned it in epoxy/resin, and then made handles from it.

Nick, I believe that was a corn cob. I have a knife made by William Bennett that has an epoxied corn cob handle. Pretty cool.

Nothing beats the effectiveness of donning a bee hat, duct taping gloves to your hands and all access to your skin, then just walk up to it and mash it with your hands. Its a gut check when they swarm you, but then just calmly walk away, throw the carcass in a fire, jump in a lake, whatever.....

Id also like to see what would happen if you just emptied a whole can of expanding insulation foam into the entrance hole.....

Hey Bobby :) Nope, this one article I'm thinking of was definitely honeycomb. I'll try to dig through my old knife rags and find it.

I never saw the corn cob, that sounds really interesting!

I used to think those cactus handles were pretty cool too. The ones like they put on a Buck hunter in Gun Digest Book of Knives from '73.

Got a pic of that knife Bobby??? :)

It is in the pic on the right. 4th knife down on the right. I remember the cactus handle. That was cool.

Nice nest , be proud that they have choosen you ;).

Regarding the corn handle, here's one by an austrian knifemaker, who is doing his own stabilizing of woods and ivory:

Strange but it seems to work. So the nest shouldn't be a problem :).
