When you're crazy enough to make three of these smatchettes at one time! Uuuuugggh!! My thumbs will never be the same.:( I think I cooked the left one and the right one has joint damage for sure! This is the first knife project I've actually kept track of my time and belt use on. So far I've invested 13 hours and 19 belts in them.Thirteen 36 grit, three 60 grit, two 120 grit, and one 220 grit. I did change the belts out as soon as they stopped cutting efficiently so they're still usable on small blades and handles and blade shaping and such. Got em boxed up and fixin to send em to Mr. Bos tomorrow. Whew!

PS. I am gonna take Kit's advice and try out the 3m 967's. Guess the days of the cheap aluminum oxide belts are over.

Those are gonna be real nice. Is that a difficult grind to do? The way both bevels meet at the spine in the middle seems like it would be hard to do. That's my favorite grind style.

Michael, One double edge is plenty hard enough but Three? My had is off to you. Nice knives!

My hats off to you Michael. One of those things would send me to the Wild Turkey Room. Beautiful knives though!

Tell ya what the 967s are the way to go. Try just one you won't look back!
By the way I tried my first couple Norax belts yesterday and today. Trizacs are history. No joke they cut longer, are thicker and run butter smooth.
You need to run em fast though.

those are great L-6, i am starting a smachet next monday(a heavy grind day) what steel is it? also Robert, norax belts work fine at slow speed for me!

Now THAT is some serious grinding!!!

Holy smokes Michael, those are whicked....whicked scarey! (in a good way).

I like 'em!

Nick

Those are to cool....
Glad it was you and not me grinding three of those in a row...
Bruce:eek:

Michael, you must have huevos of steel to have even considered such a project... :D Exceptional job pulling it off! Hope to see them finished, what are specs?

Dave

Michael those are beautiful. How long did it take to grind one of them. What size wheel did you use 10"??? What type of handle material are you going to put on them?

Thanks for posting the motivating pics,

Jim Bunker

I have just ground 3 daggers myself, (not as nice as those) so I can appreciate how hard that was. Nice job Michael.

Thanks for the nice comments and encouragement folks!! The blades are around 10" at the ricasso and the overall length is around 16". They're 3/16" 440c and 2 1/2" wide. DT. I used a ten inch diameter wheel on these. The first one I made was 3" wide and it was really a bear to grind on a ten inch wheel, thats why I went with 2 1/2" on these. They're probably going to end up with black canvas micarta handles. One is spoken for and the other two are going to be on my table at the Gulf Coast Custom Knife Show in April. Sure hope some of you forumites get to come by and handle these smatchettes.
