I'm not a great sharpener, but I'm not terrible either. I have a sharpmaker, Smith's Diamond Tri-Hone and a few other gadgets that I can get a knife cutting paper with! Again, I'm not great but I can get them decently sharp. I just picked up a Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener. I do not know if it's the angle guides, the materials, or a combo. of all of this but I love the thing. I got my VG10 and S30 blades hair poppin' sharp WAY quicker and easier than anything else I have ever used. For those of you that are pros already on stones this may not mean as much haha. But for those of you that have tried several different sharpeners with so so luck, I HIGHLY recommend this thing! It's a great sharpener and all-in-one with no setup either. Pick one up!

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you found something that works for you.

Generally the biggest challenges novice sharpeners face is a lack of sufficiently coarse abrasives and an inability to hold a consistent angle. The Worksharp fixes the former and gives metaphorical training wheels for the other, so it's little surprise that it's getting you results! :) They've generally done a very good job of integrating features into their equipment that makes them beginner friendly and nudges people in the right direction in terms of their proper use. Whoever does the design work for them is very attentive to the user interface with the product, and I applaud them for that.

I agree completely - it's already shown me a few things I was doing wrong. After using it, I can already see a difference using my standard Smith's Tri-Hone. That's the sharpener I really want to get consistent on as it is nice being so much larger. But yeah, that Worksharp is the best $25 I've spent on sharpening gadgets.

If you haven't already, spend another $5-10 on a red permanent marker for marking the bevels. Tremendous aid in sharpening!

No need for sharpie. This thing is 20 and 25 degrees. It's going to touch up the edge on pretty much everything. And, when you put a thick blade to that guide, you will end up with even greater angles...

True for the field sharpener but it will surely help with the Tri-Hone. :)
