Along the same lines, this is a nice site for getting information about the etymology (=history & development) of words in English:

http://www.etymonline.com/

Obviously in my 'line of work', I tend to find this sort of thing more interesting than most people, but this site presents information in a pretty accessible way, and the history of English words is often quite amusing:

marshall - originally referred to a stable-hand, not a high-ranking officer ( http://www.etymonline.com/m2etym.htm )

read - originally meant 'to explain, to answer a riddle' ( http://www.etymonline.com/r2etym.htm )

silly - originallyl meant 'blessed' ( http://www.etymonline.com/s6etym.htm )

and more, these are some of the strange ones I thought of off the top of my head

I downloaded this unbelievable program a few days ago ran it and my computer has increased it's speed X 50%. Make sure you get the new 2.0 Beta version. I was able to get rid of 65 MB of duplicate and unnecessary files and trash that had accumulated.

I have been using this Naviscope program for several years and it is an "indispensable" aid. You can monitor practically everything that is happening as your computer works it's magic in real time. Just move your cursor up to the chevrons that drop down as a website is loading and watch. It blocks banners and popups like you wouldn't believe.

Or try this program:

http://www.megspace.com/computers/tinyspell/

"TinySpell 1.3
License: Freeware
This utility allows you to easily and quickly check the spelling of words in any Windows application. It monitors your typing on-the-fly and alerts you whenever it detects a misspelled word. It also checks the spelling of every word you copy to the clipboard. The program comes with an American-English dictionary containing more than 110,000 words. "

you'll have to have a program to UnZip the installation file.

Such as:
CoffeeCup Free Zip Wizard
From:
http://www.coffeecup.com/freestuff/
which also gives away:
CoffeeCup Free Pix Viewer Plus
Free DHTML Menu Builder
Free Scrollbar Wizard
Free Flash Text Wizard
Free Image Slicer
Free Icon Studio
Free Thumbnail Factory
Free Video Player
Free File Protector
Free Browser Skinner

btw, I haven't tried any of the above programs yet myself,
although I intend to.
