You Want A Thrill ?

Recently, I went through a spate of buying straight razors. I picked up 3 off Ebay, and I had one my dad gave me new before he died. I had never used one. Well, I got the "itch" to try it. Needless to say, it was terrifying, but I read everything I could about how to do it right, and tried to follow the instructions very carefully. It worked. Took me about 15 minutes to shave, but that is absolutely the best shave I have ever had. Feels like a baby's butt (and people who know me already said my face looked like one :D) Plus, it makes you feel alive when you survive your first cutthroat razor shave. I got a few nicks, but nothing major, and with practice, I'm sure I can eliminate them entirely (plus I can pick up better soaps and whatnot). If you want a real thrill, shave with a straight razor. What could be more traditional than that?

Do you mean scrape off the beard God gave you for protection from the sun, wind, and/or cold ??
HEAVEN FORBID !!!

I used a straight razor for most of the years I shaved in my late teens and early 20's, haven't used one in awhile though. yuk yuk

I have one, and have used it a number of times. I think perhaps I need to get a nicer one if I'm going to use it regularly, for it didn't seem to be sharp enough to shave smoothly (even with proper stropping).

Peace.

That is quality home entertainment. The main thing I got out of shaving with a straight razor is an appreciation in the varying levels of "razor" sharp.

You can get that edge where it'll slice the hair right off your arm, but if it snags at all, you don't want to put it anywhere near your face.

A Rolls Razor is a fun thing to play with, too.

My wife bought me a new Dovo with red dyed bone handles to replace the ancient Wade and Butcher machete-razor I started out on, and the first time I shaved with it, I looked down and saw that the water in the sink was bright red. Just for a second I thought I had cut myself down to the quick without even realizing it. Of course, it was just some of the dye coming off the bone, but it gave me an extra bit of a wake up call that morning.

I think I may upgrade as well. Mine's an old one of my grandfather's, and I can't quite get it as sharp as I'd like, no matter what stropping paste I use.

Ah, shoot.

Now you're going to have to sharpen a Bowie and shave with it.

Not as smooth, but you started down the road.
