A couple weeks back I took this picture of my son grinding on a blade. Graham is almost 12 and loves hand-sanding. He doesn't really like grinding though. I'm thinking of making a knife vise and showing him how to use a file. I think he'd enjoy it more than grinding.

Here's the first knife he made. Not the one that he was grinding on above. It will be knife #2. Graham has a perfectionist's eye and decided he wanted to start over and use stainless.

Get him to hand sand as many of your blades as you can before he finds out that it sucks:p

Just kidding. On a serious note it's good to see you getting your boy involved:thumbup:

We have an agreement: I'll grind out the blades and handles and he will hand sand them. He hopes to make 3 knives this year and sell them for spending money. He was suppose to have this one done by spring break but it didn't happen. I suspect that as summer approaches he will want the spending money a little more and be more inspired to finish them.

That's really cool.

Wish I had started making knives when I was 12!

I want to get his skills developed before he starts drooling over girls. At that point he'll probably want to take a 6 year hiatus, hehe. He told me yesterday that now that I have an anvil, he wants to start swinging a hammer!
