Your BD-1 Experience

Hi everyone,
I figured I'd start my first thread off with my favorite knife manufacturer. I'm looking into the lightweight Manix 2 to add to my EDC rotation/collection. I've used delicas, the para 2 and a few of the sage series for a while now and I'm curious how BD-1 performs relative to VG-10 and S30V.
I'm pretty set on all the other features of the Manix 2 and it seems like a great buy but I don't have any experience with the steel. Curious about all the standards such as edge retention, corrosion resistance, sharpening, etc..
I'm don't typically hard use or abuse knives so it doesn't have to chop down trees but I want something I can use for basic slicing/EDC tasks as well as some minor outdoors tasks/camp tasks as a secondary blade and have it hold up reasonably well. The excellent size/weight ratio is what sold me on it.
Like I said I'm mainly interested in the steel performance but any knife testimonies are welcome!
Thanks in advance!

My comments are, of course, anecdotal but I quite like BD-1. Up until Spyderco came out with the new Manix 2 LW w/S110V steel (an absolutely awesome knife!) the Manix 2 LW w/BD-1 was my favorite EDC.

BD-1 does not appear to hold an edge as well as S30V or VG-10, but is much easier to maintain a razor sharp edge. BD-1 is very easy to work with. That simply means that I had to touch it up more often, but in the end was able to keep a very sharp edge with little work. I have had no problems with chipping or rolling even though it got a lot of hard use.

So - if you don't mind the need to touch it up more often, it becomes an excellent steel for EDC. But if that is something you won't (or can't) do, then you'll more than likely wind up carrying a dull knife.

Finally, consider the new Manix 2 w/S110V. All the advantages of the old BD-1 version but with super steel instead. Cost is just a tad more than the BD-1 and it is worth every penny.

Best of luck. :)

You'll probably be happy with it, especially for the price. I was always able to get BD-1 on my UKPK very, very sharp on the sharpmaker, and for normal food prep, package opening, etc it held a decent edge. The edge definitely doesn't hold like S30V, though. I've never owned VG-10, so I'm not sure about that one. All that being said, for about $100, you can get the Manix LW in S110V. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I thought I'd at least mention it.

Great Tips!! I'm going to go with the S110V version. I had no idea they made one. I actually enjoy sharpening my knives but I've been wanted to get my hands on a super steel blade for a while now. I'll keep my eye out for a less expensive BD-1 blade down the road so I can try it out.
Thanks for the quick responses!
