So you use this thing for just about everything from gerneral camp cutting tasks to preparing food.

What do you use to coat the blade with to protect it from rust?

I've always used Tuff Cloth on most of my general knives, but I don't think I want that on my food.

Any ideas?

I use a Victorinox SAK. I think it's the Recruit. I don't treat the blade, but do wipe it off when I'm done cutting and try to keep it from staying wet for any length of time.

I use the Spyderco Chinook, plain edge. I use it here in the Bay Area because of the proximity to the urban areas.

When I am up in the Sierra or other more remote camping spots, I carry a 4 inch fixed blade with a neck knife for back up.

I never have had a rust problem with the Chinook, but most of my trips are short (less than 1 week).

Mine is the Victorinox SAK Soldier Model ... same model actually issued to Swiss Troops. Actually, I have several - the oldest being a 1984 model. With minimal care, a drop of RemOil in the springs and good wipedowns after use, they keep and hold their appearance and functionality. Sharpening is done on a SharpMaker 204 and these fine knives take a keen edge very quickly and hold that edge for a reasonably long time.

Hey, I get hungry now when I smell tuf-cloth because I associate it with my knives for cooking!

Just kidding.

Any non-toxic oil will work to protect your blade -- even olive oil. It simply separates the H2O from the steel...

Best,

Brian.

I generally pair a lock blade Victorinox like the Rucksack or Firemans
with a good one hand opener. My favorites incluse the Sebenza (easy to take a part and clean) Spyderco Military (my Usual outdoors folder), Calypso or a MT LCC or SOCOM.

For folders, I've used the SAK for light stuff and a CS large Twistmaster for heavier jobs. Of course, I still prefer to use a fixed blade whenever convenient. I'm too lazy to want to clean folders when stuff gets inside them.

On my Strider Buck I use Olive Oil it sees more food use. On my Strider Model BT, I have used R.I.A.L from TOPS Knives Rust.Inhibitor.And.Lubricant
Great on both knives.

Leatherman Wave (scissors and can opener mainly, plus the pliers are good for handling hot cook pots) and a Spydie Endura plain edge for general use and most of the food prep.

I always have some type of "one handed folder" in my pocket, but for "camp chores", I either have this knife, or its military issue counterpart[I just don't ahve a handy picture of it], the #1760, wtih my gear. Its super useful,a nd certainly an American classic in either form.

Lots of good choices. I normally use a fixed blade knife, specifically a Fallkniven F1, but I usually have a Leatherman or SOG Multitool close by.

I keep a Camillus G.I. Utility pocketknife in my car kit.

For rust protection I prefer Break-Free CLP or Corrosion X.

Hey, Will, I just picked up one of those Camillus "U.S." all-stainless pocket knives last month! Got it for $10.00 on closeout at Wal-Mart. I'd been wanting one for years. My Dad (who retired from the Navy) used to get those and TL-29's from his buddies all the time, and give them to my brother and myself. To this day, I have no idea where they all went. Great multi-purpose knife, though, if you don't want to shell out the bucks for an SAK (which I have), or just as nostalgia that still does the job. I wouldn't relace my Rucksack with one, but wouldn't feel unprepared if it was all I had, either.
