I’ve been lusting after the standard large Case Stockman for some time. Just a really big fan of the pattern. Up until earlier today, yellow delrin was the way to go. I headed over to a quality online retailer of Case knives to order and what did I find?! A black Micarta variant that was 10 different shades of awesome!

There’s a price difference but I’m okay with it. One is CV steel and one is SS; I’m not particular either way. Due to handle material options, I’ve reached an impasse unfortunately. I need the help of the sages within this forum. Which scale would you choose? Which is more classic? Which will age more gracefully? (Also, I can’t default to the regular “buy them both” option as extra funds are in short supply at present..)

Yella
More classic. Has a pleasant warmth to it. Ages lovely as it starts to round at the edges, and around the shield.

Of course, if both may be an option down the road someday, the yellow delrin will still be around…

Yellow for me also. Love the look of aged yellow delrin.

Yellow delrin is the quintessential Case knife cover.... but it's also kind of like a butt..... everyone's got one. The micarta might be the better choice, if you want "different". It would likely age better than delrin, as well.

If you think the Micarta variant is “10 different shades of awesome” then I would say that would be the one to go with.

Both materials are durable but I’ve seen a lot more pin cracks develop on Delrin handles than I’ve seen on Micarta handles.

I think the Yellow CV is the more classic/classy/"traditional", and is the one I'd choose.
IMHO (whch is worth much less than nada) black knives get boring after a short time in the pocket or hand. I rarely carry mine.
(some of which, like the standard Buck 301, only come in black. :( )

For a large Case stockman I would say look for a chestnut bone from 1999 or 2000. They are absolutely beautiful.

Given the two choices, I’d be going with whichever is in CV steel (likely the Delrin), lol. Aesthetically speaking, I’d go with the yellow Delrin. It doesn’t get much more classic than a Case in yellow Delrin.

I typically stick with Case’s jigged bone though. I am completely convinced that the jigged bone Case puts out is among the best of any production knife.

Black Delrin (synthetic ebony) is a favorite of mine. Not sure the big stockman is offered in that cover material though. Yella Delrin or Amber bone would be my second choice

Case makes so many awesome scales I couldn't pick a favorite, any of their jigged bone are nice. I really like when they put out unique ones like this.

I've got two Case knives in jigged bone and they're both excellent. My favorite, though, is a sawcut bone barlow. If I could figure out how to upload pictures I'd show it.

Of the two choices you are looking at, I prefer the Delrin. But I like Micarta too.
Yellow Delrin is the "classic" choice, but I really like the Black, Red, and Blue Delrin colors too.
Of course, Given more of a choice, I would choose their Chestnut Jigged Bone... the stuff is absolutely gorgeous.
