Your Dream Khukuri (If you could organize the kamis) Would Consist Of...?

Mine is the following...

1. Blade in which kami of choice received a bonus by Pala for exceptional work.
2. Wood was purchased from, and "super selected" by a Hawari, and brought into the shop. After the handle is fitted, the best Hawari carver known is given all the time he needs to produce his masterpiece, and allowed free reign to interpret what he feels would be the ultimate carving for the selected khukuri model.
3. All materials Nepali, as well as all craftsman, excepting MB's steel. :)
4. Solid buttcap at least 3-4 mm thick.
5. Any designs and workmanship given the proverbial blessing of the kamis.
6. Blade carving done with extreme precision with super straight lines and exceptional detail, even if I were required to pay for several days' work by the best engraver known to BirGhorka.
7. Scabbard made in the best buffalo leather available, and very deeply tooled; time required to complete it is not an issue.
8. All furniture that would merit engraving done by the "resident black belt" furniture engraver after being fitted by the best kami bladesmith.
9. Blade sent to U.S. in a temperature, humidity, and shock protected environment, and sent to Pendentive or other U.S. bladesmith for a bit of blade tweaking.
10. Said khukuri, including shipping costs, to be sold as a blem by mistake.

I'd like to see a wood handled, Chiruwa, bhojpure style khukuri about 19-22" long, thin blade by Bura, old style bolster. In a Terry Sisco sheath.
I really like the large M43 style blades. The bhojpure khuk Yvsa got from Atlanta Cutlery's antique sale is a real beaut.

My dream is a pair of YCS, one in horn and the other in wood. Right now I'm leaning towards chiruwa-style since the balance on my YCSi by Sher is so great. Proper convex edge and perfect heat treat. Cho very near the bolster. Steel bolster and buttcap. No need for decoration. Karda and chakma with distinctive handles, and perfect hardness.

Those are such a pretty style. Wish they still made them. I missed out on those.:(

I pretty much like HI khukuris as they are, or as I myself can modify them. I use my khukuris, so I'm not to into the ornate scrollwork, etc. If a khuk were too pretty, I couldn't bring myself to use it. You don't chop kindling with a kothimoda. Actually, an 18"-25" AK is already pretty close to my dream khukuri. I have one by Sher of which I am particularly fond. I can't think of much I would change on it, same with my 25" AK by Kumar. I have personalized both of these knives in various ways, but they are still clearly recognizeable as HI khukuris.

The closest thing to a holy grail of khukdom for me is probably the dui-chirra. I love the shape of the blade, the toolkit, and the sheath design. I can't think of any special modifications I would have done. It would be nice to have Bura as the kami, and I'd like a superbly glow in the dark saatisal handle for the khuk and deer horn on the tool handles. Still within the realm of an everyday HI product I guess. Geeze, maybe I just need to work on my imagination:)

Each one of you has got me spinning with ideas. :D

You know, Josh, I hear you on the point that you use your khukuris, and are not really into scrollwork and other embellishments. On the other hand, just asking a kami to engrave the handle pins on a Chiruwa WW II could give it a bit more character... They're all beautiful as they are, and I understand why most (?) forumites just tweak them the best they can, polishing up the handle and blade, and getting a scary edge on it.

I'm a Dui Chirra fan myself, and for me the Chitlangi is king. If any of you know who the bigtime Chitlangi HIKV guys are, do let me know, and I'll search there posts, in hopes of getting photos, and/or details of the customizations they had performed.

One that you cannot steal.

Like maybe 20,000 volts of electricity in the handle, and only I know how to operate the on/off switch!

:D :D :D

Me too!

The Chit is a wonderful long khuk, love the bell on the pommel.

my other HI Duis are the Sanu YCS and the Sanu Ak Bowie, also such wonderful and sturdily built blades. Fullers are matching and immaculate. They even meet up nice at the spine near the tip, so the spine has these wide scallops if you look along it.

I'm a fuller junkie, so my ideal HI khuk would be a Sher Tin Chirra Berk Special in horn, silver fittings. Sher would make it all, then conves the edge, then Sanu would fuller it deeply (knowing that Sher made it beefy to start). It'd be about 20-22" and weigh under 2 pounds.

You don't even pay extra for that very powerful design statement and practicality in weight reduction without the expense of strength. I hope Uncle Bill is not listening, but when Avi's photos showed it off to me the first time, at Yvsa's instigation, I was smitten, and immediately thought it was underpriced... It's one of the most beautiful works of art that I know of, and I eat up any and all Chitlangi information. If anyone has had any buttcap engraving done, I need to see it, and need to see it post haste! :)

Munk, you're a Chitlangi fan I believe, and a long time forumite... Let me be privy to some of the secrets all you guys jealously keep to yourselves! :) Who has the perfect Chitlangi, and what modifications or custom ops were carried out at BirGhorka? What is "allowed" as far as modifications are concerned, that will keep it a 'traditionally accepted Chitlangi'? I prefer to remain a purist on this model... Why would I want a 21" instead of an 18" Chitlangi and vice versa. If anyone cares to fill me in on insider information, please send me an e-mail...

Mine would be real simple...
-lightweight (titanium?)
-Slip proof handle
-electronic cutting edge like the the 'Frisbee' used in Predator II
;)
You know, the one that went thru the slabs of beef on its way to Gary Buisey...and kept going...:D
