I want to get a set up for sharpening my edc knives that get a good amount of use daily. I almost have to hone or steel them several times per day. At work I cut everything from copper wire cords on household items like lamps, toasters and tvs. I also cut those plastic bands around boxes and such. I also have to cut several layers of clear plastic pallet wrap. I even cut that material on aluminum lawnchairs. Cardboard and sometimes my sandwiches for lunch. Hell even my toenails some nights. My main knives for work are the Buck 119 and the Buck 105. I also carry a KaBar Mk2. Soon I will be adding a Randall and a Busse for edc but maybe not for work. A knife is a knife and not a work of art to be kept in a safe.

I would say an Edgepro but maybe a WorkSharp WSKTS belt grinder or Kalamazoo belt grinder or paper wheels for fast work.

dream setup eh ? EP and all stones available and a heap of freehand stones. some 15, 10, 5, 3, 1, 0.5 and 0.25 micron diamond pastes, a linisher, and some of those ultra fine diamond sprays :p

Dream setup? Shapton line for edge pro with an Atoma 140, and a whole set of DMT's benchstones including pastes and strops.

Dream setup....
(1) Entire Shapton line
(2) Entire set of Atoma plates
(3) All of CKTG and Ken Schwartz's stropping compounds
(4) Various different strops of different grits and materials (different leathers, woods, etc.)
(5) Metallurgical microscope to examine edges
(6) Electron microscope
(7) Free money to get whatever Ken Schwartz is trying out!
(8) Precision metal-shop with CNC to make various sharpening rigs.
(9) A calibrated CATRA machine to test sharpness
(10) A calibrated Rockwell C Hardness tester
(11) Friendship and advice from the most advanced and experienced knife-makers and knife-sharpeners.

Uhhh oops... That's much more than just stones! :D

The set up I'm saving towards is:

Worksharp for axe/tomahawk/khukuri sharpening
Edge pro w/ all the top of the line stones and stropes for my knives
Some good quailty medium to fine grit bench stones and stropes for quick touch ups
A nice 3 piece set of coarse, medium, fine stones in a small size that I can carry in my pack for field sharpening
And some kind of nice micro scope to really get perfect edges
That's all I need and ill be ready to sharpen anything

I may dabble in paper wheels as my skill in free hand improves

I'm going to ignore the confines of the OP and shamelessly copy Lagrangian's list from #5 on. Then add...

one of those dyno-lite microscopes like Clay Allison has
a variable speed belt grinder
SiC bench stones between 3K and 10K JIS (don't know if these exist)

Of course, if I finally get my hands on a light saber I won't need any of this anymore.

My edge pro assortment works well along with Japanese water stones, soft and hard Arkansas.

For those knives that you abuse regularly, a belt sander like the little $39.95 Harbor freight and a couple of belts, 180 grit and 320 grit would be ideal.

For something like a Randall, get an edge-Pro, and a set of Shapton stones.

Rpttrsn, that's what I'm talking about! I already have a killer microscope. I have a set of stones and a ceramic steel for field carrying. Time to work on getting an Edgepro. Then more stones.

My dream sharpener, of course, should money not be a concern would be a Bader 3 belt grinder, with a complete set of belts, and a Baldor buffer with felt wheels and compounds ranging from .50 micron diamond, down to .025 micron diamond.:p

I love my Kalamazoo 1x42" belt sander for my convex edges. I recently acquired the Edge Pro Apex and am extremely impressed with it. I love the mirror edge I can get on my blades. I would love to be able to obtain a great edge free hand but I just don't get close. I use a paper wheel set up for my lower end users - very quick and it puts on a great edge but I have been inconsistent in getting my angle right with it so not willing to use it on my higher end knives.

It seems that your kit is relatively complete.

Do you have leather belts and submicron diamond or CBN compounds for that belt sander? They will advance a good convex edge to a magnificant edge.

Entire line of,

Atoma
Shapton pro
Chosera
Naniwa

And my dream set would be all natural Japanese waterstones plus #6 from Lagangin's post.

would you be able to put a whole knife in it ? i thought it was limited to very small samples.
