They don't tell you everything. I've tried twice to put a polish on a knife, first on a Gerber EZ out, then on an Opinel, and this last time it was with an AD. The first two times I was disappointed. I put a nice finish on them with 2000 grit sandpaper, but I could still see the microscratches. Everything that I read on BF said that I was doing the right thing. Starting course, I went from 1000 grit to 1500 to 2000, but still no mirror finish. I could see a reflection but it was hardly perfect. Well today, I finally got it figured out. After you finish with the 2000 grit, you have to use rubbing compound. Oh, and this is important, using Oil with wet/dry sandpaper (or water I guess) makes a big difference, at least to me. I recommend it. I don't know if actually helps, but it allows to see that you're making progress by making the oil look dirty, which is a psycological victory, at least to me. I don't know maybe another high-powered polish will work, but rubbing compound, from Turtle Wax worked best for me, then I followed with Mother's metal polish and Ta Da, a nice shiny polish. It's not a mirror, but it's pretty close, all of the residual micro-scratches from the 2000 grit sandpaper are no more.
So now, I'd like to hear from you guys, what can we learn from each other?
Thanks.
