Hi guys!

I was surfing through a german online shop and found knives made by "Colonel Coon". These knives should be made in the US, as I was told at the german site. I never saw any of them here at BF. Do you guys have any of them? I never heard about them. The steel which is used, it was called 440. Not really the last call in steel. The knives I saw were all limited to 200 pieces.

I was just wondering, that I have never seen or heard anything about them.

I´m looking forward hearing or reading some of your opinions.

Kind regards
Andi

P. S. What I forgot, these knives were in the prize range of Canal Street; for german prizes roundabout 100 € ~ 130 US $.

I have never owned any of the original Colonel Coon knives but I have owned a few of the new ones that are made by Queen. Queen was contracted to make the knives by a store in the Smoky Mountains. The fit and finish of the new knives is on par with other knives from Queen. I think they may have used more than one type of 440... or at least I've seen it advertised differently. I think the prices largely depend on handle material but they are generally less expensive than equivalent knives from Schatt & Morgan. Canal Street uses several steels and the prices vary with the steel and handle material so I'm not sure how to compare the two.

Hi Jake!

Thank you for the replie. I was surfing through the german vendorssite. Some of the knives were made with 440 or 420 steel.

If they were made by Queen, this would be ok. Imo.

Well, maybe some of you guys have Colonel Coon made by Queen Cuterly. Though I think they are a little too prizey for the used steel. It´s not allowed to post the vendor link here, so that you guys can see what I´m talking about...

Kind regards
Andi

I had never heard of "Colonel Coon" until this thread today (which in itself is nothing new; I learn something new just about every day here).

"Colonel Coon" sounds like a cartoon character!

I think I'd enjoy having a Colonel Coon knife, just for the name. :-)

LOL @ ~P! Cartoon character... That was what I thought when I read the name on the vendor site.

Here´s a site of Colonel Coon http://www.colonelcoon.net/
It seems they stopped production in 1988. As Jake already said, maybe nowadays they are made by Queen Cuterly. :)

Kind regards
Andi

I have two, and they are both decent knives. One is a junior Scout pattern with a funky can opener blade, the other is a small (3") split spring humpback whittler, both of them in 420HC with autumn gold handles. They weren't super sharp out of the box, but 420HC sharpens up pretty easily. Both are nicely made, pretty much what I have from Queen.

Neither have gotten hard use (yet), though I know that will change, especially for the Scout pattern, camping season for our Troop starts next week

The only Colonel Coons I have any experience are the more contemporary Queen manufactured ones. The overall quality of the knives is comparable to pretty much any other Queen knife which is decent but not perfect. I feel with colonel coons it's really more about the name than anything even though they're good quality.

Ive seen some of the stag ones sell for ridiculous money.Like Jake said, its another name SMKW bought ,promoted ,and sold on the Kniveslive TV show and maybe their catalog.Never had one myself, but they should be a good knife.

I got Queen made colonel coon. Its everybit as you can expect from Queen: Patchy. Handles are almost always beautifully made but there might be gaps or no gaps between liner and handles. Steel is quite hard... iknow I reset the bevels from 25 degree to 20 and it was quite work... Excellent user knives... for collectors item... depends on your sample.

Hello,
I have one of the old Colonel Coon Stag lockback knives, made in the 1980's. it reminds of the Kabar dogheads
of around the same time(not the originals) in quality. There were not many made, and are shooting up in price quickly. They often go for $250 and more. Very nice stag was used.

I know I'm often easily amused, but I'm still giggling whenever I read the subject header. Oh, to read the collected Experiences with Colonel Coon.

The alliteration helps; after reading through another thread here recently, I was thinking someone has had to have peened the pin on a Colonel Coon at some point in time, so their experiences could include, "My Colonel Coon's Peened Pin."

(awkward silence)

Okay, I now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

;-)

Hi guys!

Thank you for the replies! They are not as unknown, as I already frightened. They seem to be nice knives... but there´s still the steel... 420 and regular 440, unfortunatelly no D2 or whatever (which is used by Queen). Maybe I gonna buy a Colonel Coon, when I have some more money ;)

Kind regards
Andi

@ ~ P: No problem! When there´s no joke allowed the world would be not a good place :) :)

I'm looking at a CC orange bone teardrop with a liner lock. Anyone have one of these? What do you think of it? Any pics would be appreciated.
