Hello,
Just wanted to make a thread for fun. What's your favorite knife?
My favorite knife (that I actually use/used and that I actually own) so far has been the Gerber Bear Grylls Folding Sheath Knife. I know Gerber has gotten some heat in the past, but (at least in my experience and with my activities) the Folding Sheath Knife is a really solid knife. I've used it camping, free diving, for splinter and stinger removal and even once to kill a venomous snake. Even though it has serrations (I hate serrations) this knife has served me well in my various outdoors-y type experiences.
My favorite knife (that I actually own) is a large "elephant knife" (I don't actually use it on elephants) that I built once. Even though it's really too big to serve an actual function in camp, I'm proud I made such a nice knife - and it also looks great. My blood is splattered all over the wooden handle.
My favorite knife (that I have used before and hope to own soon) is the Cold Steel Recon 1. The knife has great reviews and the "Proof" video of it that I watched made things even better. In the brief time I was allowed to use it, it felt great. Also, that knife just looks awesome. I heard the knife comes hair-splitting sharp out of the box, which is nice because I despise sharpening.
I also really like the Full-Size Ka-Bar (with a straight edge, I hate serrations) but my Scout troop probably won't allow it (I only got into knives because of Scouts and I only really use them during Scout activities) and my parents probably won't either. But I'll see. I'm more of a folding-knife kind of guy, but I'm drawn to the Ka-Bar like a moth to a flame.
A knife I hate: the Gerber Ultimate Survival knife. I thought (because of amazing previous experiences with the folding version of this knife) that the fixed-blade would be awesome. I was dead wrong. The knife isn't full tang, the steel is bad, the fire starter is also bad - there's a lot of bad things about this knife. This knife basically taught me that if you want a fire starter and a knife, buy a fire starter and a knife - not a knife/fire-starter combo. Or just buy waterproof matches, but that's another story. Also, I learned that buying all your knives from one brand was a terrible idea, so I started exploring a little with my brands. Although a terrible knife, this Gerber was a great lesson.
