That subject alone should generate positives and less than positives. I've been researching tabletop milling machines and have run across Sherline Products and they make what appears to be a fairly nice tabletop milling machine for reasonable money. Has anyone had any experience with this manufacturer? If not, which ones have you used and liked/disliked?--Thanks, Dan;)

Dan, my favorite vote goes for a Jet table top mill, mine has an 8x24 inch table. It works slick as can be, needed no tuning or refining out of the box, has coolant and pump, takes R8 tooling, runs a 3" face mill or 3/4" end mill, uses a 4 inch swivel vise and does finger guards easily. The mill lives on a steel stand welded of 2" square, 1/8" wall tubing, 1/4" steel plate work top, with heavy wheels so it can be moved around as needed. As a "drill/mill", the disadvantage is relocating the head if you need to move it during work, but a pointer laser mounted on the head allows you to relocate within .002".

Yep, its true, bigger is better, I can't dispute what the machinist's say. Bigger means more rigid, more power, deeper cuts, bigger mills and faster cutting.

But, I can't afford a Bridgeport size mill new, don't want to mess with moving a used full size one and don't have room in my shop for one either.

Most of all, think about what you are going to be making with your mill.

:D :D :D

I too have a mill/drill tabletop model. It uses R8 collets and has an 8"x32" table. I can put a 2" fly-cutter in and surface forged damascus. It has a 220v 2hp motor. I only paid $700 for it used. I like it alot. When I grow up Im getting a bridgeport.

Dan,
My favorite mini milling machine is the Grizzly model G8689.
I mill with this machine and drill with it. Nice for folder
work..slotting guard..notching blades for guards and etc.etc.

I'll second the recommendation on the Grizzly. If I had the room and resources for a larger mill, I'd love to have one. But I'm still developing (slowly) my skills, and have been very happy with the mini mill. If I had it to do over again though, I would have bought a larger mill/drill and waited on the drill press.

I think the sherline are toys....my opinion.
all the taiwan mills are made in ONE place......emco, jet, grizzly, harbor freight.....HOWEVER......the JET people take the time to put the right wheels etc on theirs and do a MUCH better overall job in finishing etc.....Sure it costs more....but you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR>
I strongly recommend that if you are going to buy a Taiwanese mill get a JET over the other brands.....also, I highly recommend a Jet over the toy mills.....having said all that...for the price of a NEW Jet mill you can get a VERY good used american machine that is WAY better than anything coming out of Taiwan. :)

You guys are the greatest! Back to the drawing board on research and looking deeper into the well for more pennies! Thanks, to all--Dan
