Good Day,

I am trying to decide on a design for a custom knife, but I am having trouble, I can't decide.

So, if you could help me I would be totally appreciative.

I am looking for good design elements for a narrow sub 4 inch utility knife. I want it to have some sort of guard like shapes, be very comfortable to hold and use, etcetera.

If you have images or links to images, that would really help.

Check out Bob Doziers site at: www.dozierknives.com

I'm particularly fond of the KM-3 Agent, and KM-5 Bodyguard (gonna order the Bodyguard next week).

Check out Rob Simonich's knives at: www.simonichknives.com

I tried to get a picture of a Simonich Pikuni on here, but it didn't happen.

I picked up a Schrade Sharpfinger a couple of weeks ago, nice design, good steel, at an unbeatable price. Now, if it could be had with a top end steel, kydex sheath, and micarta grips....

Marion, I have a couple of Bob Doziers knives and they are the finest knives I have ever carried. Also, they are fine people to work with. You should see their knives with old ivory micarta handles.

Not2sharp,

Go to this link (On/Scene Tactical) for pictures of a custom Kydex rig for your Sharp Finger...http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/customer.htm

....as for my favorite shape. I like the Benchmade AFCK blade shape.....

If you want just a little bit of a guard, then a Loveless Dropped Hunter like the Fällkniven F1 is probably close to ideal.
But in many cases you can get by with even less -- due to the rest of the handle shape, for example WM1 or EKA W11 -- and less can be good. If I'd design something today, those two are the ones I'd borrow most from.
There are of course advantages to go for a classic design too. (And you know best why you want a guard and how big.)

Fallkniven F1

Busse Mean Street

Livesay NRGS EX

Can't wait to get a Allen Blade MEUK and a Tadpole.

I have and use my cold steel master hunter.
That is the only knife I have in that size and can't think of a better one. I have owned and sold lots of customs and that is my favorite.

Marion,

My current favourite is the Spyderco Moran featherweight, extra sharp, very comfortable to use and unobtrusive to carry.

BTW your hannibal quote is now on billboards all over England advertising Johnnie Walker Black Label scotch.I'd sue if I were you...

Dozier may be your best bet.

In "sub 4 inch", I've got the Slim Outdoorsman and his Canoe Knife.., both of which are extremely nice knives.

Thanks all.

beginner- If the quote will help develop a sense of solution focus as opposed to problem focus, then I don't mind.

KirkD- Tell me more about the Canoe, that one has caught my eye....

My RJ Martin Handiman is my favorite fixed blade utility knife. Recurved blade, hollow grind, nice large choil on such a small blade, strong spine, D2 steel, full exposed tang, kydex neck sheath...

It came WICKED shrap and does every outdoors camp chore with ease. The only thing I did was get rid of the chain and use cordage instead. The chain was noisy when I moved around and drove me nuts.

You can see it here:

Best,
Brian.

Brian-I have been looking at the Handiman.

I might already have one, but in general, I only buy second hand, saves me money.

HM- I like the look of those PH's, but they don't show on the secondary market often, and they are a bit pricey it seems to me.

Tommi- I like Leukus, maybe one day. The Mora 2000 I have is almost a small leuku.

beginner- I carried a Moran for months, but it lacked something for me, nice knife though.

my favorite is an old russel belt knife

reasonable thickness and thumb groves on top

now in a nice kydex sheath

Another good choice would be the Ed Schott "Small Camp Knife." CPM 3V steel, cord wrapped handle (I'm sure you could get scales put on there though), 4" blade all at $100. http://www.angelfire.com/ct/schottknives/

Take a look.
