No wrong answers. What have you actually carried successfully through airport security that you'd recommend someone else take?

Very little, I've had allowed stuff taken away (lost one pair of mini crash shears and a titanium spork). I've got some very mini scissors for my next trip, so I'll be hoping to keep those. I take some very small zip-ties (they make good zipper pulls and on occasion proof of opening). I mostly stick to a lot of electronics and adapters so I always have phone charge, and focus on methods to keep paperwork in place. When traveling internationally I keep at least a couple pens because someone always needs one, I get ones that are good enough to get returned, but cheap enough to lose.

Just be super careful..... I've had a pen taken away from me because it "clicked" with a "bolt action". Really frustrating, as I had to catch the flight, and it was my favorite pen...and now it's in a lost and found at the airport.

So if that's the case with pens, just imagine what they come up with for multi-tools....

I've been through airports a couple of times with a Gerber Dime on my keychain that I've forgotten to remove. It's one of the TSA compliant ones that doesn't have a knife blade on it, but nobody at the security checkpoint even seemed to notice it in the xray tray. It may not be as useful as a larger tool, but the pliers are good on mine, and that mostly useless zipper hook ground down into a good eyeglass screwdriver.

Victorinox makes a small "knife" that doesn't have a blade, just scissors and a few other things, the size of a small SAK. That's a pretty useful thing to carry when I travel.

Something tells me the TSA agent forgot his fork for his lunch that day.

Something tells me the TSA agent thought your pen was nicer than his.

Are you sure it was the Dime? The Dime I see has a blade. Also, what color was yours?

Are you sure? I haven't been able to find this. Do you know the model?

I flew all over the country with this very LB-7 back in the early 80's. Nobody said a word, and nobody tried to hijack our planes.

I think Bo and Luke were wearing sheath knives around the same time.

The TSA agent on site has the final word as to what can fly or not. It doesn't matter if your "whatever" is TSA approved. My blade-less Gerber Dime has flagged by the new agent as a weapon and not allowed. I complained and his manager overruled him, but warned me that agents have the final word.

Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife, Red

Since I own 2, yes, I'm sure. This is the title on Amazon, but I don't think I'm allowed to post the link.
Thanks for replying but nope. That is just the standard classic SAK Classic, and it has a blade. TSA confiscates them all the time (and I know because I buy them from ebay sellers who buy them in bulk from the TSA.)

...since people are talking about the olden times, I used to buy Victorinox or Wenger knives from the duty-free, in various countries and carried them with me with mo issue ever....

I doubt that helps much.

Even "TSA compliant multitools" which should only apply to the US, where TSA is, can be removed from you.
Internationally, I have even been questioned regarding knives in checked baggage, though nothing was taken.

In theory, in many countries you can carry a small scissors or even a small blade on you, but there in guarantee that the airline or security people will not question you and make you waste time.

From the EU website : Any sharp objects that might be used as weapons are not allowed in the aircraft cabin. These could be everyday objects such as corkscrews knives and scissors of a certain size, which should be packed in your hold luggage.

So, small scissors may be OK.

IATA is even stricter : All knives, sharp objects or cutting implements of any kind and of any length, whether of metal or other material, and some sporting goods must be packed in checked baggage. They cannot be carried in the cabin baggage nor on your person.

So, you may fly with scissors from Europe and have them taken from you passing through a US airport, for example.
Some airlines even do their own additional checks.

Then it's mislabeled. Other sponsored web sites (sellers registered with BF) call it the Victorinox Jetsetter.

I remember flying out of Monterey Calif in the mid 80's and setting off the detector. We discovered my Schrade "Bear paw" and the inspector gave me a box to put it in, and to give to the stewardess, who returned it to me at the end of the flight. No harm...no foul.

Thanks! And you've gotten it through TSA? Seems like it looks so much like a regular Classic that TSA would instinctively confiscate it?
Many times I've gotten it through. It's never been confiscated, and I would simply leave the terminal, they won't get it from me. The last time at Denver International the conversation went like this:

You can't bring a knife.

I know.

This is a knife!

No, it's not. Show me the knife.

They open everything and get frustrated at "not catching me", and wave me through.

Reading these replies, all I can say is I'm glad not to have flown commercial since sometime in 2000. I can carry a gun or knife when I fly. ;)
