One grandmother of mine made her own salad dressing a milder yet fuller richer tasting french.

My other grandmother used to do a cast iron fired chicken, as in go out to the barnyard, grab a chicken, use pure lard, well you get the picture.

I'm still trying to make southern-style cornbread that matches my grandmother's. I have her recipe, but every time I make it, the egg separates out. Oh well, even the bad batches are still pretty tasty. :)

(For Europeans, Yankees, and other infidels; a proper cornbread should be salty, not sweet)

Her meatloaf, mac'n'cheese, saurkraut/pork/dumplings, a fruit-cocktail pudding bake.

Man I miss her and her cooking.....

Oh yeh, can't forget makin the tollhouse cookies at midnight while stayin over on a Friday night.

I don't have any of my own grandma's recipes but I have some of my wife's grandma's recipes. They take a little getting used to as she never measured anything so you don't get an instruction like "Add a teaspoon of salt" - you get something like "twice around the pot with salt". :D

Her fruitcake! :D

Nobodies has been better - it'd make ya long for fruitcake...

In fact, one Christmas, as they were in the process of being made, no less than three individuals thought they'd help the process along... you see, she used bourbon... Well, gramps walked through when noone was looking and added a cup; my father walked through when noone was looking and added a cup... And Grandma ALWAYS used a cup and a half!!!!

6 weeks later when they were ready... you could smell 'em from rooms away! And they still tasted great!!!! :D

I agree with you, this sweet cake like stuff is nice, but it isn't cornbread. Do you have a recipe or two that you can share?

I have been trying to get back into simple meals of a bowl of Pinto beans and a plate of raw chiles and salted raw tomatoes but I need a good cornbread to make it a meal, it doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be flavorful.
