As you guys might remember, I am going to the North East next week, I should be there for 3-4 weeks, and plan on spending a hell of alot of time in the woods...the problem is I might only get to spend late afternoons and weekends out in the wild. I have to work when I'm there, I'm helping out my parents. they are gettin on in age, and need alot of stuff done on there place out in the woods, as they want to sell next year..Its just to much for them to handle at thier age and condition. I already know that I am going to start fires and set up a cool camp...but what are some cool ideas for say 3-4 hour activities in the woods. I will have atleast one buddy out there with me all the time, as my friends are all pretty happy I'm coming home...we all camped out every weekend and chance we got. I hope to get out and go to some cool parks and stuff, but my parents live n a swamp/ marsh land with no neighbors, so I can just go out the door and be completely alone...what do you think I should go out and do? One buddy from TX is going up ther with, as he has never seen the NE, and is going to help with the Carpentry on the house, he is kind of a Outdoorsy person and said he would love to learn about primitive living. so we have plans on ruffing it as much as possible. I have some Ideas, as far as trying to take as many pics of the wildlife that I can, and tracking to do so...I want to build a cool camp using only our kits and tools..and I want to construct a trap for my personal favorite animal..the FischerCat..(crazy-I know) After this, I was thinking that if I had stuff planned, or a list of things to do...it would motivate me, I dont' want to get lazy...so..can you guys think of anything? Thanks, I know you guys have the goods to help. Gene

My first idea would be to make one or more fireplace/ovens for food. I don't recall the name but one is a fire pit built underground with a draft hole for air. The other depends on any naturally occurring clay, and make an oven. Then from there maybe make your own jerky/pemmican? Just a few first thoughts.

This time of year , especially near swampy wet areas , a few weeks should give you time to try out different kinds of bug repellant :D
I've heard great things about the Thermo-cell , and will be trying out Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap this weekend , I hate DEET only a little less than black flies , skeeters, and deer flies.

I always like to make things when I'm camping. Try building several types of traps, throwing sticks, spears, bow and arrows (talk about a project!) identify edible or useful plants, practice different primitive firestarting, different fishing methods. Bring a few survival manuals and try some things you haven't done before. You will have a blast!

tknife has several good points , I am taking a survival book w/me to Colorado just to try new things and because I never really been camping outside of TX,CO. has a slightly different enviroment & wildlife.

Nothing wrong with TX, but your gonna love camping outside of her, Nice forests...tall trees, man. Good stuff.

OK..this is important, what is the BEST product out there, as my parents said the deer ticks are really bad, not to mention the mosquitos and black flies. I always used Skin So Soft, as a kid, but I don't have any and don't even know if they sell it anymore. I learned about this avon product from a guy in the Green Berets as a kid in the early 80's...He swore it would keep em of me, I thought he was trying to trick me, finally believed him when a couple of other guys said it was true. I then read about it somewhere years later., that it was considered a good way to stop from getting bit.

You know, I used to have a book on identifying edible plants, I don't know where it went, I need to get another one. I always carve on stuff, I was thinking a deadfall, but really BIG, and instead of dead weight, a large wooden cage or basket....a big live catch system..My parents have the big metal live trap cages, I think building it woud be more fun.

Cool, thanks...its been awhile since I looked for any. Thanks, TXtony.

Oh boy, you are going to love the ticks and deer flies! I used to live in Ohio with swampy woods all around, and let me tell you that a whole bottle of off won't keep the deer flies away from you. Horse flies aren't so bad because they are big, slow and there isn't as many of them, but the deer flies are small fast and attack in swarms! I really hope that avon stuff works for your sake or you won't last very long. Also, ticks are really bad were I was anyway, check often for them and if you are going to be sleeping exposed to them you might want to look to see if anyone has any good ways of keeping them away from your shelter.

Grew up all my life camping in the mountains of California and never once seen a tick, but when I was in Ohio I couldn't take a 10 min walk without finding one on me, and one time I spent a half hour picking all the ticks off of my brother and that was only a couple hour hike.

Good luck on your trip and I hope you have fun, but seriously consider tick and deer fly prevention.

Oh and btw, I vote for fishing!

At night, take a moment and try to find some life-saving constellations.

Especially look for Ursa Minor and Ursa Major--both are visible right now from your location, and if you know how to read them, you can find North really fast.

But don't take my word for it... go off into the night (only as far as you can definitely find your way back), and double-check for yourself that Polaris is over the North horizon.

You might also be able to see Cassiopeia if you're North enough at the right hour of night right now. Her "W" points right at Polaris. See if you can spot her five stars. If you can, you can find your way home that way, too.

There's more to do at night than light a fire, of course.

I grew up on this swamp, this is the house I grew up in, so I should make it, although, its been awhile....If I remember, its the Horse flies that really get to you, and you just have to tune out the Mosquitos..some people can't do this..I don't even hear them, unless one has landed in my ear. I think that when you grow up in a marshy area, with ALOT of insects..you just adjust to it...nothing special..just get used to the buzzing and humming..Even to this day in TX, when the Mosquitos get bad, at say a cookout or something, I watch everyone scratching and swinging their arms around, and I have to ask, are the bugs bad or something??? But ticks are a real problem, and you have to check for them often...I have never really found a way to get rid of them, and they seem to be getting really bad....when I was a kid, I don't remeber getting covered with them...I would have one here or there, but it seems like now they are everywhere.....in ten years, its gonna be like a horror movie or something....I really think they are getting worse or more prevalent. Gene

OH..and my stepfather has a new bass boat...so I'm going fishing whether I want to or not! I hope to get down on the Pond, they live behind a small pond, it has trout and Pics...I hope to cast a line for my dinner a few times.

You might want to try some shelter building. Who knows, part of your work there might be clearing brush, which could come in handy. Then when you're done and have to burn the debris, nothing says you have to use gasoline and matches!

Have fun!
