Thought of this occurance on the crowded train. My folder clip sticks out of my pocket - thankfully, usually the front pocket. Perhaps one should keep a hand close as LEOs do to their guns during casual conversations????? Food for thought.

Another thought - many are counseled not to escalate and take pull out their knife if in, say, a "run of the mill" bar fight or wrestling match - at least until the point at which you're being strangled. But what if your "up close and personal" friend is losing, takes the knife out of your pocket, and uses it on you???? Should you have even carried it given our sometimes perverse legal system?

Whoa, you're opening up a "can-a-worms" with that question. But I like controversy.

1. I never carry my blade in my rear pocket. You're right. It can be picked easily, not to mention it's harder to notice if it falls out. I carry smaller blades in my front pocket (e.g. change pocket of jeans), or sidearm style. I usually carry larger blades in a sheath at the rear of my belt and wear a longer-than-waist length jacket.

2. Local by-laws aside, everyone has to use their own judgement on whether to carry a blade for defensive purposes. I would say definitely do not carry it if you are physically/emotionally NOT IN CONTROL. You are a danger to yourself and everyone around you. Otherwise, if you carry it you'd better be prepared to use it but only in a defensive/or critical situation. You're first option should be to get the hell out of there. Remember, you have a blade and don't want to hurt anyone if you don't have to. Besides, think of the possible legal ramifications.

P.S.

- Sorry, I always forget to write something important and have to P.S. the thing.

Another danger of carrying a blade is that it may give the carrier the feeling of superiority, or invincibility.

This is a dangerous thing as you're more prone to ignore danger signals around your environment(e.g. a mugger stealthing you aross the street), or you might act like a tough guy.

The latter is doubly dangerous as you will be more apt to start sh-t if some guy accidentally bumps you on the street, or gives you the "finger" while you are driving.

Remember that he may be carrying a blade too, or worse!

I always clip my knife in my back pocket and haven't had any trouble with things like that happening. I don't spend much time in large groups of people though, hell I don't even spend much time off the farm

But I have developed a habit of checking the knife every once in awhile.
To be completely honest I've had less trouble with it getting caught on things since I started carrying it in my back pocket than when I carried it in my hip pocket.
Hard to say on the self defense aspect. In the end its a hard decision that you'll have to make on your own if your going to carry knives. My take on it is that I don't want to be put in that kind of situation, and will avoid it if at all possible. And I choose knives by how well they will meet my daily needs ( fighting is not considered a daily task

) But if I get put into that situation, I'll do whatever I have to with whatever I have to use, to handle it.
