Hi all-

Looking for some opinions on your personal favorite, "slices like a demon", production, locking folders. :D

Like to keep it under the $200 mark, but a few bucks more isn't a deal breaker.

Thanks in advance!

Benchmade 581. ~3mm blade thickness with a high flat grind and M390 steel. Cuts very well and the M390 is easy to put a fine edge on.

What marcinek said. You just can't beat an opinel. However, I do wish someone came out with a more modern take on it. You know, like a one hander, slimmer knife with a pocket clip but still keeping it's traditional vibe.

Opinel trumps all in a folder.

For modern knives, the Spyderco PM2 and ZT 0770 are both excellent.

Definitely a fan of the PM2, I'll have to check out the BM 581. The Opinel is probably a little bulky, for my intent. Thanks for the suggestions, so far!

Bulky?!? An Opinel cant weigh more than a few ounces, and the handle is neither thick, nor wide! The 531 appears to be .65 in thick, 4.75 in long closed, and weights 5.2 oz!

On Opinel 9 with a blade of similar length weighs about 2 oz!

Delica (may need thinning behind the edge), Chaparral (blade is only 2mm thick & thin behind the edge), Kershaw Leek.

Opinels have a pretty "girthy" handle for a folder (meaning, its more round than square/rectangular). I can see how someone might not want something like that, if they're used to thinner clipped folders. And it is worth noting that you can get the slim models, or you can sand/carve down the handles to be slimmer to make the profile smaller (I mean, its just a solid wood handle, make it any shape/size you want).

But I agree, Opinels have been the best out of the box slicers I've found so far, but I'm sure there are other good ones out there. I love my #6, and even though its "bulkier" in my pocket, because its overall so small, and weighs close to nothing (1.2oz apparently), I have found that I've forgotten it was in a front pocket a few times, which is rare for me (I hate stuff in my pockets).

And for $10 or so, its worth a try for the OP, at least to see what the fuss is about (IMO at least).

Good luck finding something that suites your fancy :).

Spyderco Nilakka

Ultimate slicer and can be had for under $150. But DO NOT do anything but slice with that knife.....It's not designed to be abused AT ALL and it'll break.

Slices like a demon, you say? That's easy. The William Henry EDC series (E6 and E10). They're a little North of $200 but they're worth it. And you probably won't see yourself coming and going if you carry one. Simply superb fit and finish. :)

Definitely a carbon steel Opinel. They Sypderco Centofante is pretty great too.

Spyderco Chaparral with 0.078" thickness, full flat grind, 2.8" long CTS-XHP blade.

Great suggestions, thanks to all; now for some fun research.

As to the Opinel- as mentioned above, I was referring to the handle shape; I'll definitely take a look at the slim version.
