This is a 83-86 124 (forgot to take a pic of the tang stamp, but trust me). It has to be impregnated birch, but the color seems awful dark to the reddish color (rosewood some call it) that I thought these were in that time span. Does it look like the red dye or could Buck have used a different dye back then? I realize each batch will very in color some what. I know they had different dyed handles later on. What do you think red or another color?

Looks like a deep burgundy to me. I have models with a light red tint and then others that are much darker. Either way, you've got a great piece of cutlery at hand.

Even lightening the photo up a bit leaves the wood very dark. I like the look.

Yes, some come out that way. I have one that's 10 years newer than yours and it is more red looking. DM

Wow. I have the re-release. I would love a wood one. It would work great for reenacting. Great looking knife, there!

gsea, I have this one that I believe is from the same era (bought this at a pawnshop last summer, do I don't know when it was made). The handle is pretty vividly red. OH

Yes OH that is from the same time era, that is the color I have always seen (actually have one that color) on that era knife. That is why I was asking about this one I picked up - so dark. Never seen one that dark, but I'm pretty sure it is an anomaly.

Just thought I'd post an update. Yesterday when I took the pic it was very cloudy out so I took it inside in low light. And believe it or not I never have looked at the knife in bright daylight. Today is sunny and bright and I just happened to see the knife in the daylight this afternoon as I was going to put it back in its resting space. This knife a dark deep maroon that is actually pretty beautiful. It compliments the lighter red knives nicely. Must of been a one off batch.

Here are two standard production knives of which I have several identical in color one early which is very redish brown in color the second 1987 is dark brown

Thanks for posting the 2 differences. Since I started this thread i have actually found pics of the darker ones form the 83-86 time period. That's the beauty of small runs.
