Your opinion on the DPx HEST Urban

My dear Knife brethren,

I am very interested in the Urban as a small and stout folder, but as it is pretty pricy I would like the opinions of people who used it in the long term.

I must admit that I love all the gadget accoutrements of the HEST, and based on the written reviews online my only concerns should be the infamous clip and some unchamfered parts. But I am also wondering about the F&F, and the fact that there is no steel washers between the titanium handles and the bearings. Also, the shape of the blade, with a very subtle beak, makes me wonder about potential tip break and difficulty to sharpen.

Many thanks in advance for your kind returns.

I don't have the urban but have other models! Heft triple black & hest assault II. I've no complaints about them. Solid knives. RYP can be a polarizing figure but he does do some good designs. Good luckIMG_20200708_202949.jpg

Not for me, not at that price level, too many other choices for less. I like the concept, not big on bearing pivots though, very gritty when exposed to dirt and such.
Of course you make the final decision, good luck. Please keep us posted

I had one for awhile. Well made, cool knife. Good idea, especially for those limited to shorter blades. Just did not fit my hand well. Wish it had, but it did not.

Guess it should fit my small paws like a glove then, thank you for your inputs guys. I succumbed to the FOMO once more and bought it as it was the last in stock at that european store.

Not for that price. I wanted one of the earlier models and waited for the price to drop more but they never did. But that is just my opinion.

As far as quality I've heard nothing but good things. Quality materials and nice design. I've held a few but nothing spectacular for a price tag north of $300

I have a few different DPX HEST folders, and really like all of them. I think my oldest is 5 or 6 years old, and I've never had any trouble from them. If there is a specific question I can answer feel free to message me, my new favorites from DPX are the DPX HEST F LEGGARO . The blade is just over 3", so it might not be something you can use, but they are really a nice blade.

I understand some people want to complain about prices, but knife companies (especially smaller ones) aren't making crazy amounts on blades. Quality equals machine time and people time, both of which cost money. For some people made in china blades are good because its what they can afford to spend, or because they lose blades all the time.

I can't speak to the knife but after the shenanigans the designer pulled here, hard pass.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Looks like the consensus is generally positive, with caveats on the size and price which are ok for me. For the moment I don't regret my purchase.

Stickgunner Stickgunner : awesome photos, did you notice blade play due to the bearings "digging" into the titanium handles in the long term ?

Triton Triton : I would like to know more about what is said about RYP, is it the same level of drama as Mick Strider ?

No, not to the same level at all. I'm sure you can do a search on it in the archives (seems like he had his own forum even) if you are really interested. Not trying to be dismissive just would rather not be the one recounting the tale.

Negative, no long term development of blade wobble, or issues of any kind.

I don't think there is anything similar to the MS talk. RYP leads an interesting life traveling the world and interviewing rebel leaders and all sorts of unfriendly people. He would probably have been better off born in the 1800s, as the adventurer of today is rather hampered. I have conversed with RYP a few times away from trade shows, and have found him to be a good guy. I have no doubt that if pushed in the wrong way, or if he perceived a slight (real or other) that he would take a hard stand. That is my understanding of what happened with his getting kicked off the forum (or leaving on his own).

Ah thank you Stickgunner, that was my major worry about the knife !

I read the posts related to RYP and I kinda agree with you. Still, the doxing was very unprofessionnal.
