I am going to buy A fixed blade for all purpose use. I have it narrowed down to either the "air force survival knife" by camilus or the "marine corp fighting knife".
If I get the air force, no problem. Now the marine fighter though...Should I get the Ka-bar or the Camilus version? Kydex or leather? If I go with the kabar should I get the origional issue or the new version with the black kraton handle? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Brian

What do you mean "all purpose use?"

I know you have your field narrowed but we just love giving uninvited advice and counsel, as a matter of fact, some of us specialize in it.

Could you specify your major intended uses, environmental, maintainence and price considerations?

BTW, KaBar, Kydex & Kraton, of your limited choices.
 
all purpose use= camp, hunt, fish, it will be my only fixed blade to use for utility chores. Knife has to be $75.00 or less.

Get the original Ka-Bar then!!! You will like the larger size over the pilot's survival knife for sure. As far as Camillus versus KaBar, I couldn't say although I have seen the KaBar version for myself and I liked it very much. The Next Generation Ka Bars I wouldn't go for. I read a new versus old comparison in a knife mag where the author gave a Next Gen with the stainless blade and all to one young lad and an original carbon steel one to another young lad and when they were camping he told them to have at 'er. The original came out on top for everything except for corrosion resistance. Take care of the carbon steel and you are in good shape. If they are making carbon steel ones but putting black rubber handles on them, I guess your choice is leather versus rubber. Hmm.... I dunno. That is up to you. Oh, I don't think the kydes sheaths are made for each individual knife but instead are mass produced so they wouldn't be of best fit. Perhaps get the Kabar with the leather sheath and then later send it ti Allen Blade or someone else to get a kydex sheath made. Let us know what you decide!

They are making the Kabar origional style with the Kraton handle now. So I think I will go with the origional style..Now, kraton or leather ?
