I am going to post my want lists (this is the first one, I also have questions about books and cds) just to see if I should get the regular dvd's or the souped up versions, this is not a request to purchase dvds! Having said that, some of the ones below I have seen, and would like to know, again, if the extras are worth paying the full price on Amazon or at Best Buy, or should I get the used copy from eBay? Thanks for your opinions.

I am looking at

Alien special edition
Akira (Japanese cyber punk cartoon)
Black Bird (sequel to Maltese Falcon starring George Segal)
Blues Brothers
China Town
Death Hunt
End of Days
Fargo
Fifth Element
Fight Club
From Dusk til Dawn
Ghost in the Shell (another Japanese cyberpunk cartoon)
Good Bad and the Ugly
Goodfellas
Goonies
Judas Kiss (starring hottie Carla Gugino)
LA Confidential
Lake Placid
Magnificent Seven
Milagro Beanfield War
Mission
O Brother Where Art Thou?
Once Upon a Time in America
Outlaw Josey Wales
Perfect Storm
Platoon
Professional
Pulp Fiction
Relic
Saving Private Ryan
Scarface
Seven Samurai
Sting
Taxi Driver
Thirtheenth Warrior
Tombstone
Untouchables
Wildbunch
X-men 1.5
Yojimbo

I've decided not to post the cds and books, there really are no valid questions for the cds, I'll just get whatever is cheapest, as for the books, I'll do the same. Thanks again.

i've always chosen to buy the special editions of all dvd's. might as well....although i've never really watched any of the special features...

i don't know why you're considering buying end of days...it's not even that great an action movie.

I liked EOD in that Arnie didn't play Arnie, he veered from his usual character. I enjoy his movies, but he is too monotone sometimes. I think True Lies showed he could act, but Conan the Barbarian is my favorite Arnie movie. Where else can you see someone punch a camel? :D

"The Black Bird" is NOT a sequel to "The Maltese Falcon." It's a spoof of it, one that came and went in theaters, and deservedly so.

As to Yojimbo, I don't know which version you're referring to. I found the Criterion version used in a local shop but never bothered with its extras. I have 4 Criterion DVDs and can't say their extras are any better than those put out by other studios. Their version of "Robocop" was very disappointing.

I shoulda said it was a spoof, sort of a sequel to the Maltese Falcon in that it involved Bogies son. As for Yojimbo, I'm asking if I should buy the souped up version, but I guess I should steer clear of the Criterion dvds period.

Then i must suggest you get the Special 4 disc Extended Edition (with alternate ending )Director's Cut of Jingle All the Way

That's a good list of movies you have there.

Personally, all I care about is that it's in widescreen and has a DTS soundtrack.

The extras do nothing for me - they just help spoil the suspension of disbelief. Why would I want to watch the Matrix, for example, and buy into this fantasy world of super powers and aliens . . and then watch a 20 minute special where they show just how fake every scene is? Interviews with the actors? The actors are not the characters they were in the movie - they usually have a pretty shallow view of the movie and may not have actually watched the complete film before doing the interview. What good is that? Deleted scenes? They were deleted for a reason. Maybe, I'll buy the director's cut . . but if deleted scenes don't make it into the directors cut it probably means that I don't want to see them either.

I've watched 2 or 3 movies with the director's commentary, and that can be cool - but again, it spoils the suspension of disbelief.

Give me an excellent widescreen picture and excellent sounds and be done with it.

By the way: how many times can you really watch "Goonies"?

Check out DVD Verdict for reviews of the extras. Personally, I find most of the bonus material pretty boring. I once spent a whole day going through all the stuff on the Terminator 2 DVDs (I was home sick in bed), and it finally started to seem pretty ridiculous. The amount of time, money, and ingenuity they expend just make a silly movie is utterly absurd.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've watched that movie, I've worn out three cassettes of that movie! I once wasted an entire Saturday evening waiting for that movie to come on, and almost destroyed the tv when it was finally cancelled! So, probably almost as many times as I've watched the Star Wars movies (OT natch).

Only widescreen for me too!

Oi...Goonies is great...

I just watched it on TV a couple of weeks back...i always liked that fat kid. very funny.

I just bought Willow on DVD today. That's another movie i've always liked. One of the best from Val Kilmer (other than Top Secret and being Iceman). He needs to play more funny roles.

What about Tombstone? "I'm your huckleberry."

I was thinking of Tombstone but can't remember it that well...all i remember is him looking sick for half the movie...

IMO Tombstone is one of the best westerns ever made. Val Kilmer's role as Doc Holiday is just incredible.

I have the director's cut of it and there are quite a few scenes in it that never made it to the theatre release. I suggest you get the D' cut.

One of my favorite lines in the entire movie is when Val Kilmer and Mike Biehn are arguing in Latin and the local sheriff says, "Look boys, we don't want any trouble here, not in any language."

Classic.

posted your list below and graded them in my own opinion on a scale from 1-10, where 10 is best and 1 is worst. where there's no score, i either can't remember the movie well enough to pass a reasonable verdict, or it might be that i haven't seen it at all:

Alien special edition 8
Akira (Japanese cyber punk cartoon)
Black Bird (sequel to Maltese Falcon starring George Segal)
Blues Brothers 6
China Town
Death Hunt
End of Days 8
Fargo
Fifth Element 7
Fight Club 10
From Dusk til Dawn 7
Ghost in the Shell (another Japanese cyberpunk cartoon)
Good Bad and the Ugly 8
Goodfellas 9
Goonies 8
Judas Kiss (starring hottie Carla Gugino)
LA Confidential
Lake Placid
Magnificent Seven 8
Milagro Beanfield War
Mission
O Brother Where Art Thou? 5
Once Upon a Time in America 9
Outlaw Josey Wales
Perfect Storm 7
Platoon 9
Professional
Pulp Fiction 7
Relic
Saving Private Ryan 8
Scarface 9
Seven Samurai
Sting
Taxi Driver 10
Thirtheenth Warrior
Tombstone
Untouchables 8
Wildbunch
X-men 1.5
Yojimbo

Akira (Japanese cyber punk cartoon)

The sound on the DVD is great. Either language.

Blues Brothers

My favorite movie of all time. Definitely worth getting on DVD. It has like 12 minutes of additional runtime, including additional scenes extended music numbers.

Fargo

I haven't watched the special features on this one yet. There's a commentary, but it's not by either Cohen.

Fifth Element

I only have the regular version.

Fight Club

LOTS of extra stuff on the 2disk SE.

Goodfellas

I just got the SE of this one. There's 2 seperate commentaries, including Scorsese, Ray Liotta, Lorraine Bracco, and others. 2nd disk has 3 doccumentaries.

O Brother Where Art Thou?

AFAIK, there's only one version of this one. Great movie to own though.

Once Upon a Time in America

Great movie.

Platoon

The SE has 2 commentaries, one by Stone, one by Cpt. Dale Dye. Plus interviews and other stuff.

Professional

OK, it's "Leon", not "The Professional". I have the older "International Version". When the SE came out, I passed on it, because I didn't think there was enough new stuff on it to warrent a re-purchase. But you might as well get the SE if you dont' already own it. Either way, make sure it's not "The Professional", and get "Leon" or "Leon: The Professional". "The Professional" is the shorter, cut, American version. The real version is 24 minutes longer and is a far better film.

Pulp Fiction

Instead of a comentary, they put trivia and such as subtitles that you read while you watch (same with Jackie Brown), which is pretty cool. There's also lots of deleted/extended sceens with intros by QT, and featurettes about the movie.

Saving Private Ryan

THe SE has a bunch of stuff on the second disk. "Making of", doccumentaries, research, etc.

Sting

Don't have the movie, but I commend your taste.

Taxi Driver

Other than the "Making Of", the special features really aren't worth mentioning. Might as well get it though, since the prices are basically the same.

Moving to Community Center ...

(Just to clarify ... I know it's confusing, we have so many forums here ... DVD players are Gadgets & Gear, but movies are Community.)
