A while back I contacted a welding shop here and ordered an 11 gauge steel cylinder to be rolled and welded for a forge body. They told me $45.00 (for the steel and rolling/welding) and asked me to call back in a week. I called back in a week and they told me to call back later that week. When I called back he told me to call back the following week. This went on for about 4 weeks at which time I told them to just call me when it was done and I gave them my phone number. Well they never called and it's been about a month since I last talked to them.

Since that time I have located some sections of cast off pipe of the right diameter and no longer need the rolled cylinder, though it would be much easier putting holes and such in 11 gauge steel rather than the 1/4" walls of the pipe I found. Do I owe this welding shop anything? Should I just go on about my business and never call them again? I hate stiffing the guy but I wasn't getting much service from them either and I'd just as soon not spend the $45.00 now. What do you guy's think?

Silent,

I'm like you to a point, when I ask someone to do something for me I expect it to be done at a set time or at least give me an idea when I can expect to be done. I would have told them to stuff it after the first call, you've been more then patient, I wouldn't worry about them anymore, its clear they weren't worried about you.;)

I'm getting a vertical forge together now, I just brought a 20" piece of 12" diameter pipe with 3/8" walls,( its a little thick but all I could find in that diameter) had 2 square holes 2"x3" and a round burner hole blowed in it ,a piece of 1/4" plate welded to it for the bottom, and a 3" x 6" shelf welded in front of the working door, and all they charged me was $50.
Just call your guy and tell him you got tired of waiting and found what you wanted somewhere else, he probably won't even remember you.

You seem to be up right and want to do the right thing.
Just call, just in case they do have you on a list.
tell them it's not needed any longer do to the time it's
taken them.
At least your not being on their level
and you can feel good about it..

It could a have been a flunky working there not caring,
they'll cause their own demise in time
if the boss catches on..

You could call and ask to talk to the manger / Boss
and tell him what happen, tell him you don't need
his services any longer.
He may fix the problem, if he's not the problem.:(

I expect what happened is that they have plenty of business. They do the high dollar jobs first and hold the little stuff for the slow times. There's nothing wring with that as long as they tell you about it and you agree. I would not have been as understanding as you. Call them and tell them to cancel the job.

Good luck with the forge!

I agree with Bill B., above. You have been more than nice to them, and they have treated you like sh1t. Tell em to shove it.

You're the customer. You pay them, therefore you are the boss. They didn't do the agreed upon job in any of the 4 or 5 different agreed upon times. That means they're fired in my book. But at least call them to tell them so, and why. I don't agree with the "saving the small jobs til last" first come first serve should be the way to go, I think. Course I'm not running a business so what the hell would I know.
