Your perfect knife ...

I spent *way* too much time reprofiling my new EDC from the factory edge last night (the unevenness of the factory bevel was of epic proportions), and I got to thinking about what my perfect knife would be. I came to a realization that no knife (or knife combo) really fit my "perfect" criteria. Every one had some little thing or other that I would change about it.

Now, I realize that this is not going to be a static thing, tastes and favorites change and situations change (camping, EDC, office vs. outdoors, etc.). But what I want to know is:

What knife or knife pair (or triplet), would be the base for your perfect EDC knife setup and what would you change about it to make it close to "perfect":

For me it is:
Primary blade: Coldsteel Code4 (CTS-XHP clip point version)
Changes: Add thin micarta inlay to the scales (like a Sebenza) to make the grip less slick and change the pivot mechanism to something like Spydercos new BP washers with large ball bearing riding on stainless steel interface. If the change to the pivot would require adding thickness overall, then maybe just a pivot bushing and BP washers (the current double washer setup bugs me for some reason I can't explain).

Secondary: Benchmade Proper 319 (modified sheepsfoot)
Changes: Improve the ease of deployment with a pinch open cutout (it gets hard to open with wet or greasy fingers) and thin the blade out a bit behind the edge to make it a smidge more slicey.

Alternative Secondary: Spyderco Clipit Tool (the new one, not the old one with just a blade and scissors).
Changes: Use a different steel for blade and tools, like CTS-XHP for the main blade and some tough tool steel for the tools (M4, A2, etc.).

Probably a Ray Laconico Jasmine with Olamic adding 3 holes to the show side, doing a backspacer for it, and ‘entropic’ finish on the internals. Blade would be .12” thick M390 with a full flat grind. Entropic finish on the pocket clip, which would be the milled ti clip from the Ursa Minor.

It would be mostly simple looking, clean and functional, with serious style upon close inspection.

A small Bocote Sebenza.
A Victorinox pioneer.
A Steingass Dropped hunter.

Still doesn’t cover everything. But it’s good enough.

I love everything about my large PJ Sebenza Insingo, but give it a M390 blade and it would be true perfection!

For EDC?

But in a trapper or muskrat pattern. Other blade should be a clip or traditional shape, something with belly and not a spear point. I've made the recommendation to Mike already.

This has been my current combo for the last month, more or less. If the moose wasn't 1095 but a nicer stainless with good edge holding, I would be in heaven.

I love my sheepsfoot mini-grip too and it's an amazing EDC but it needs better steel... so I'm selling it get on in M4. The CPM 154 just hasn't done well with cardboard for me.

I don't know that I have a perfect EDC folder, because I enjoy variety, but if I had to have one knife that would do it all, I'd want the following:

- Emerson Super Commander
- Standard Emerson G10 scales (smoothed out a tad), with both liners being titanium (flamed or jeweled optional)
- Triad lock
- S35vn

This would be my perfect knife.

The Spyderco Amalgam looks pretty close. Hurry up and release that already, please.

The only thing I don't love is the bearings, but they're the larger and improved bearings, and are running directly on steel liners, so they probably work great.

I like this. I love Emerson designs and ergos, but I hate liner locks especially titanium liner locks. Throw a Triad on there and it would be awesome!

I would nitpick stupidness to no end if I let myself. My perfect knife is the one I use and feel satisfied with the performance of consistently. My favorite is the TRC Splinter Deluxe. Not truly perfect, but consistently does the things I want with ergonomics I like.

The Benchmade 710 does it for me. The version in Blue/Black G10 with an M390 blade is just about perfection.

This(Spyderco Rescue, FRN, ATS-55), made with micarta, liners, and something like s90v.

One of the several CRK’s that I have
One of the several Big Chris knives I have for fixed blade carry
One of the many other knives I have depending on what needs to be done that day.
I have discovered that there’s enough variety in knives today that offer exactly what I’m looking for that it’s just a matter of choosing which one I think I need. Maybe that’s why I’ve got so many and think I need them all.

Benchmade AFCK and Mini AFCK.

Change #1: Make it available.

Change #2: Make it somewhere in the $50 to $75 range.
