Your pocket knives and outdoor knives in the Kitchen?

Someone please explain to me the phenomenon of the dying urge to use one's knives so much that you must use them in the kitchen. I know, nothing says manly at home than using your SAK, Esee, Becker, Buck, Spyderco, Cold Steel, and millions of other choices and culinary utensils AT HOME. Not at campsite, in the woods, etc, but AT HOME. You even post pics: a beautiful slab of animal, some tasty veges, a fork on the left, your wine or upscale Ale next to the plate, and a pocket or sheath knife at the right side of the plate. WTF? Do you not own a decent, even adequate, set of kitchen knives??? C'mon, was the $300 custom blade bought with the cash you could have gone to the Wal Mart with and picked up a cheapie Farberware set for $40? I mean, really, your undying need for showing off blades could be done with a KAI, Benchmade, Henckels, or other quality set of other Kitchen knives you could show off, and that will, undoubtedly, work better it the kitchen.

Can anyone explain the logic behind this need? And, please, no 'cause I can' answers. I know you can, but WHY?

Our kitchen knives suck; as it is my wife has managed to cut herself with the awful, dull knives that are there.

On the other hand, I possess many nice, expensive, sharp knives, so on the occassions I venture into the kitchen, I bring one of my nice knives to use. :)

(and because I can :D)

Never!

I have compotent kitchen knives ;)

Ha, I know what you're saying. I enjoy showing photos of my knives as well as looking at others' photos, but never in the kitchen. Not only would I feel stupid, but if I sat down at dinner with my Emerson Commander next to my plate my wife would just look at me and say "WTF are you doing??"

You know the fancy knife sharpeners they make? You can use them on kitchen knives, too. Amazing bit of info.

Yeah, me too! I only do that for the In Laws!

Wish I could sharpen your kitchen knives.

as a chef im obsessed with sharpening, I go out of my way to sharpen coworkers home knives for free just because I like to.

no one should tolerate a dull knife whether outdoors or indoors, especially a supposed 'knife nut'.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous. If your kitchen knives, which are knives *designed* for processing food, aren't sharp, well, duh, sharpen them. If you can't figure out a way to sharpen and maintain your knives you probably shouldn't own them.

It's just as ridiculous to use your tacticool knife in a restaurant. 99% or better of the time you'll get sufficient utensils and if your steak is so tough that you can't cut it with their steak knife, you chose a poor place to eat.

I like using the right tool for the right job and tactical and outdoors knives are not designed for the kitchen even if one uses them in camp to prepare food.

My guess is a lot of people doing this sort of thing are fairly young, new to carrying a knife, and want to post look-at-me photos on forums like this one.

I agree.

just saw a thread where someone replaced their kitchen knives eith outdoor tactical knives.

Why? Well because I don't have alot going on in my life, so why not.
Bon appetit and cheers. And yes I just made this dinner ImageUploadedByTapatalk1371775919.513365.jpg

Im 22 years of age and when i walk into the kitchen it has never occurred to me that i can use my say seb 21 to cut my samage in half. I always use a kitchen knife. Also most of the people that post pictures with there pocket knives cutting a steak are older people. I will keep names out of this.

an amazing thought... i have used my EDC at various times for steak and bread and etc chores at restuarants that i have visited, because the cutlery at the resturants are sadly lacking and could not even cut notebook paper... but the Kitchen? i fixed that about 6yrs ago... was first in line at the Tualitin, Or knife company <wink wink> yearly sale and came home with a complete set of Shun Classic kitchen knives... so no i leave my collection and pile of EDC's in their cubby holes. now camping is another venue all together...

Ooooh, great contest idea! First photo posted of someone using a tactical folder in a sit down restaurant wins a free knife from me.

I have a couple kitchen knives that I use exclusively, they're sharp. The rest of the people in the house have a knife block full that they can choose from. I sharpen these occasionally. I only use the ones in my pocket when the chore to be done is just a cut or two and getting mine from the drawer is inconvenient. I have been known to just use the one from my pocket for food prep just so I can take a pic though.

Uh, I use pocket knives , folders and various other knives for food prep. My lifestyle limits which knives I can have, as I live in hotels and work on airports. Over the years I have pared down my wants and needs towards knife styles, and outdoor knives just simply have a versatility that dedicated kitchen knives lack.

If you are a knife nut, and you even occasionally handle knives in the kitchen, you owe it to youself to have at least a couple of higher end dedicated kitchen knives. Joy to use and easy to justify.

Its not like they are going go wear out soon . Just hand wash each time. Only takes about 20 seconds to wash and dry.

Sometimes flipping around a balisong to cut some tomatoes entertains me and cutting up fruit with a carbon steel slipjoint is, to me, more enjoyable than using a paring knife. There aren't any huge downsides to it and it makes me smile.

Missed the part about my wife getting cut even with the knives as they are, eh?
Amazing bit of info...
