I'm interested in a bushcraft style knife for general woods / back country use here in the Canadian Rockies, and I thought you folks might be able to help me choose a smaller knife maker to support. Price range is ~ $250, blade size of ~ 4-5", scandi or sabre grind, and a sheath with a spot for some firesteel would be a bonus. I use an axe for splitting wood, so I don't plan on hammering on this knife.

Some of the knife makers that I have been looking at include KFU, Koster, Fiddleback (absolutely beautiful work, but have to watch and wait for one to pop up), BRK and BHK. I don't mind waiting a month or so for a custom.

If you're willing to share some opinions and or photos of your bushcraft knives that would be awesome. Thanks

I have 2 recommendations.

BHK Bushcrafter and either a JWKnives Tanto or Bushcraft model. Bushcrafter on the R foreground (black), Tanto is L foreground (blue). The BHK is comfortable in the hand and has a good solid heft. Came shaving sharp. Leather sheath with a firesteel slot. The Tanto is just a rugged rough and tumble knife. It is my main outdoor knife and it does work. I do not do any of that batoning silliness so I can't tell you about that, but it's been good for everything else. Came with a simple kydex sheath, TekLok ready and you could piggy back a firesteel on it if you want. The BHK was a gift from the wife so I have only been using it gingerly. I would be hard pressed to choose my favorite between the 2. BaCustoms also makes some fine outdoor knives.

Tanto didn't come with patina, I did that

You might want to check out some pukko's, check out some of Roselli's they are very nice knives and come hair whittling sharp. However the BHK bushcrafter and the Large Workhorse are also both excellent knives. You might also want to check out some of the custom makers here on the forum, Im sure they will make one for less that 250:).

Marry that woman :)

Also thanks for pointing out JW knives, now I have something else to drool over!

Oh I did! And the JW is really a great knife, he sells in the sale forums here, in fact I think he had some listed a couple days ago...

If you want an awesome Canadian maker check out Bruce Culberson !

Other top guys who you can't go wrong with are Bryan Breeden, JK Knives, Mark Wohlwend, Dylan Fletcher.........I could go on and on but I'm sure you have plenty to work with there !

Fantastic, just what I was looking for!

Brian Andrews - Off the Map Knives - Check out his Terrasaur. I need to pick another one up this year. For $250, you could customize an awesome one and his wait time is usually quite reasonable.

Now that is one good looking knife

There are so many great Bushcraft style knives available right now it would be hard to make a bad decision. ESEE and Becker make some great production knives. If you want a little more custom blade I can highly recommend BHK. Pick a blade that looks good and a handle that fits your hand and go for it. Good luck and let us know what you choose.
