Your Spyderco: Why did you sell it?

There's a thread over in General the gave me the idea that we could probably give some good feedback to Spyderco on their knives if we looked back on the ones we got for our own use, then decided not to keep, and either sold or gave away.

So if there are one or more Spydercos that you've let go of in the past, tell us what it is and why you got rid of it.

For myself I'll note that I'm not a "collector." I'm looking for that one perfect EDC, which I can own two or three of. I'm still gathering experience from trying lots of different clipits. These aren’t all in order:

Larger Wegner - My first Spyderco. Very impressive feel, and heft. Ultimately the large belly, high point, and hollow grind let me down for my admittedly "gentleman’s" needs. This is where I learned to dislike hollow grinds.

Bob "T" C15 - I lucked into one of these. I treasured as an object. I found the ergos and blade profile to be perfect for EDC, but the saber grind was another let down. I passed this on to a friend who's a Sebenza fanatic.

Carbon Fiber Police - This was a beautiful piece. Carried easy, great point, but for 'serious' cutting the hollow grind as usual was an issue. Ultimately really just too large, esp. for something where only the point was useful for me.

Plainedge Rescue - Thin, light, cut like an absolute laser for light duty. Loved the straight edge. It's inability to penetrate point-wise retired my pair - a more important function than I'd realized, even for utility. Hated the barrel-bolt clip too.

Carbon Fiber Civilian - A really magnificent piece. Was very surprised to see that Sal had listened to me an added the tip-up carry option (thanks Sal! :D ). I have no criticism of the knife itself, other than by carrying it, I learned that I didn't like to carry a weapon.

Grey Matriarch - got this one used from Sal himself (thanks Sal! :D ), but it went with the Civilian for the same reason.

Military - just too damn big.

Native III - I really liked the handle on this knife. One of my last real attempts to make nice with a hollow grind. Didn't work for me.

Assist II - Took the FRN handled knife to a whole new level. Loved the wharncliffe point - this got me really looking at wharncliffes. The whistle really didn't work for me. Don't care for the Hood. Not really into serrations either. Finally it was the overall size and bulk of the piece that shifted me away. The wire clips on this and the Native III were great.

Meerkat – Really a nice little handful of a knife. Phantom lock was very easy to use. The wire clip failed me and it went back to Spyderco. Reverse-s blade profile was so shallow that it didn’t seem to offer any advantage over the drop-point. This one ended up being too small, and too bulky for its size. And I don’t like tip-down.

Lil Temperance – I’d loved the look of the trailing point and had really looked forward to getting one. But once again that high point and lots of belly fell down a bit for EDC. And it is a very bulky and heavy thing for the amount of blade length you get. Fine for an MBCer, but a drawback for light utility use (which it isn’t intended for). I didn’t bother trying the leaf.

Impala – all the same issues as with the Wegner. You’d think I’d learn. Don’t care for tip-down either.

Salsa Ti – Having had to sell my beloved and perfect Lum Chinese folder due to new draconian carry laws in Boston, I’d really looked forward to this. But on my first run model, the wire clip was too tight, and the detent failed to keep the blade closed in pocket or on the draw – especially with the hood trying to wave it open. I found the hood to be an unnecessary addition. Also the lock bar traveled over very quickly with EDC use. This soured me on framelocks a bit. I had it factory serviced then passed it on.

Almite Navigator – the slots in the handle made it very uncomfortable in the hand.

Shabaria – I like this one despite the hollow grind. I recall being annoyed with tip-down, but I think it went because it just wasn’t quite what I was looking for. I think at this point I really began looking to knives with about a 3” blade.

Ayoob – this one was like a SS Police. Thin and easy to carry, great point, and that’s it for me. *&*(^! tip-down. %^$%! Hollow grinds. Too large for my EDC.

Spyderhawk – It had at least some utility use, if awkwardly, but at the end of the day it was a weapon, and I didn’t feel comfortable carrying it, and it went.

Schempp Persian – From all of my prior experience I knew it wouldn’t work for me the moment I saw it, but it was too pretty and refined to not try it. Oh well.

Dodo – the only hollow ground knife I liked in EDC. No real criticism other than I liked the Para better for EDC when it came out, which retired my pair of Dodos. The Para was just a more comfortable and natural extension of the hand for all cutting tasks. And with no blade length restrictions in my current locale, there’s no need to put up with the restricted (though great) ergos, and more specialized blade profile of the Dodo.

WT Kerambit – I was looking forward to this one, and it is a gorgeous knife. But the moment I held one in my hand my gut reaction was “brass knuckles.” It really struck me as being a pure weapon, and so it went unused.

Para-Military – This knife really redefined EDC utility for me. My only complaint was tip-down only carry, but which is at least partially own fault, so I can’t complain too much. Though I haven’t actually sold it the arrival of the Yojimbo has pretty much retired it. The straight edged 3” blade with its lightsaber point, and straight-handle ergos took me one step closer to my unseen and still undiscovered ideal. I can’t say anything against the Para, the Yojimbo just suited my uses better, and sometimes you don't know that there could be a "better" until you happen upon it.

Hey, you guys are derailing my thread! ;) I suppose most people here will only have a few that they've sold away.

And you could say that it is part of my 'job' as Moderator to have at least handled, and preferably have used, all of the Spyderco models. But I can't afford to keep a stockpile.

Good thread Carlos

Native lll: great ergos, but really not better a cutter than a S30 Native, and definitly more bulky.

Salsa: way too bulky for the amount of blade, and the blade shape just didin't do it for me. All that "belly" up towards the tip of the knife made the tip too "blunt" for my tastes.

Spyderhawk: I had a PE version. If it was an SE (Ironically, the only knife I have ever wished was SE) it might have made the perfect garden knife. Also, was REALLY big and scary - made me feel like a velociraptor.

The ones I kept: Lum Chinese, Calypso Jr., Rescue, G10 Harpy, Dodo, and S30 Native.

I've only parted with one. I gave a Co-Pilot to the wife of one of my friends. I was carrying this along with a Mariner at the time and she loved the little Co-Pilot. I wish I had goten another. On the plus side, she was a great cook and kept us well fed.

I have sold a nmber of Delica's and Enduras but in no way cuz I didn't like them or they didn't work for me. Usually sold them for what I had payed for them or more and then turned around and bought something else, often a new D or E. The only Spyderco that I have that I am not hugely fond of (listen up now Senator) and would consider selling off or trading is a CF police. I like the size and the blade but I don't like the CF. Too thin and not grippy enough. I really shoulda bought the g10 when I had the chance. Oh well guess I'll just have to get the Mili.

I've never sold any of my Spydies, but I've given some away. I gave my son a pair of Endura and Delica as a high school graduation present back in 1991 and I gave him and his fiance each a "Q" model before their marriage. The "Q" didn't work out for them or for me.

I haven't parted with any of my Spydies either, but I've bought a few that I quickly retired them from EDC for various reason:

CF Police - Beautiful knife, scalpel-sharp blade. Handle is too slick for me to hang onto and too pretty to modify for better grip.

Jotsingh Khalsa - Ergonomics don't fit me well, clip causes knife to ride too high for me.

Spyderhawk - I wanted to upgrade from my trusty Delica to a hawkbill-type blade, but one quick look told me I'll snap the tip off in no time if I carry and use it daily.

Hi Carlos, thanks for the thread (though I don't have much to say as I never sold any of my beloved Spydies) :D
OTOH, did you try the Calypso jr.? I think you might like it.

Naw, haven't tried it, thought the one I handled did seem quite the scalpel. In that vein I'm looking forward to the UK Penknife.

50/50 Delica, after having my Endura stolen from me I got it on sale as a replacement. It didnt fill that role to well so when I needed some extra cash it went to the pawn shop, cool thing was they gave me almost what I had paid for it originally. Right now the only spydies I have are my well worn cosat framed Police and my black Perrin Bowie that I got from the company story when they were on sale.

Hey Guys,

Well for me, I've only been using Spydies for a couple of years, I tried alot of different patterns over the years. At some point I found I liked certain patterns over others, and I liked Spydercos for strictly utilitarian rather than collector reasons. So I culled the herd recently.

Out went - Endura frn, Delica frn, Starmate, Calpso Jr frn, Endura ss, Delica ss, and Meerkat frn. all sold for about 25% less what I paid.

Kept for use - Calypso Jr SE micarta X2, Dodo SE.

I realized that I just don't care for frn and ss scales, some models I culled were too large or two small, The ones I kept worked for me as general utility knives, I would buy another Spydie in the future if I liked the pattern.

The Spydies I have sold, have been old Delica and Endura models with plastic clips. Gotta keep up with the times.

The only Spyderco that I got that I just don't care for at all is the Dyad Jr. Frankly knives like this confuse me (double locks), and the blades did not seem up to serious use. Now someone may correct me on this, and say they cut apart an old '71 Buick with one, but hey... have fun! I think the Benchmade 921 is a better concept of the two blade format.

I guess a better way to put this question is:

In your collection what Spyderco's would you NOT sell: For me it would be the Dodo, Gunting, Spyderfly, D'Allara, Gray Calypso Jr., Native, and the Delica I carried the day my son was born... Any of my other 30 or so Spydies COULD be sold under the right circumstances.

I have sold, bought and traded many Spydies while looking for the perfect EDC.Many were knives that I liked but was looking for something better that ussally did not turn out to be better so it contines. The closest I have come to the perfect EDC is in this order
Sebenza
Military
Starmate,flat grind would be great
Native in G10,CF would be great
Para if it were a liner or lock back
I do belive that the knife I an looking for is a Lg Classic Sebenza with the ti back scale frame lock,G10 with nested liner front scale and a Spydie hole.
Still looking, selling, buying and tradeing, although I have started to belive that I have come full circle.

I've only sold or gotten rid of 2, though a few others have been 'retired' since they're not often carried lately..

Salsa: too stubby, not enough point, didn't hold an edge as long as other knives I had. I loved the smooth action and the small size. I gave this one to a friend and it is still his EDC 3 years later.

Dodo: I really liked this one at first, and carried it a lot. The ball bearing lock is very nice and the action was smooth as silk. I also loved the blue g10 scales. After awhile, I found that I kept having to use other knives to accomplish every day tasks. The Dodo just couldn't slice a large apple in half, for example, or a bagel, without extra effort. The S curved blade doesn't really do woodcraft type work well either, which is a must for the blades I carry. It would make a good SD folder in the city, but where I live, I can carry fixed blade of any size that I want, so it didn't really have a function for me. I traded it for a knife I thought I'd never like, a Military, which is now my EDC folder...

The only Spyderco I've parted with so far was the Salsa, but _not_ because of the blade profile. I hated the "stubby" blade shape before I owned it, then found that it really wasn't too limiting and actually suited the knife's role very well.

The reason I got rid of it was the combination of cobra hood, weak detent, and tip-up carry. The little guy kept "waving" half-open when I drew it. Ultimately, I just didn't trust it. It ended up as a gift to somebody who needed a good knife and didn't mind the opening problem.

If that problem was fixed, the blue Al salsa would be my near-perfect "little big knife".

This thread is beeing very useful and informative for me. Thank you very much.

I have only one - the Police SS Gin 1. I bought it in 1995. Had to aply warranty replacement on it shortly after purchase. It kept becoming dull near the tip - when closed the blade bouced to the frame near the handle hole.
The blade is a bit loosened now and has some side travel when opened. I would send it for fixing but it seems difficult because I live in CZ, Europe. I tried to tighten it myself with little effect. Now I am looking for some knife with adjustabe pivot. Have not made decision yet.
