I am a recent convert to the ways of the Douk-Douk...if you like the ability to carry a knife that goes totally unnoticed in the pocket, slices like a demon, and built to go through a war, then I would definitely recommend the Douk-Douk:D
This one is the smaller version, and I have hands on the larger size...a friend gifted me this one and It is the perfect EDC carry size. Just big enough to tackle most any chore, and again, disappears in the pocket!

I wish I had gotten one years ago :)

Great knife. Super unique. Takes a wicked edge easily, but not great at holding it - no worry, though, the flat grind makes or amazing geometry so it keeps on cutting.

They're among the toughest slip joints IMHO. I had one that I wore the blade down pretty badly sharpening. I "converted" it to a fixed blade (google can explain it better), and did some pretty stupid stuff with it. The steel is pretty soft, but very easy to sharpen. I like the model with the Squirrel on the chromed handle better than the ones that sport the Turkish clip point. That's just preference though. It fits in perfectly, with other ethnic folders.

Great knife - stout, very slim, awesome cutter. I removed the bail loop from mine and now it consists of 5 parts (including two rivets). For me it is traditional Sebenza - a knife made for work. Of course I am not talking about quality - it is still a bit crude, cheap knife :)

I've wanted one of these for a while now. It took me years to finally pull the trigger on an Opinel, which is now one of my favorite knives. I guess I'll never learn!

Bearing in mind the low cost, why not just give one a try? :) My pal ScruffUK gave me a Squirrel and I think it's a great knife.

I don't know about the op but the low price is almost always what keeps me from buying it. Completely indirectly mind you. It's just that at any given time I have about 40 different things in my (insert website store name) shopping cart that I really want and they keep me nickel and dimed to death! :)

Well, seen as though I've given away every single one I've bought, you'd be forgiven for thinking not to bother....however, I have gifted these because they are a wonderful knife (and the recipients have also been well deserving of these gifts too :)).

People have already covered the advantages of these knives above. I'd be very surprised if you are not equally as impressed by this honest wee knife....and if you aren't, well as JB says, you're not too outta pocket, I'm sure someone you know would enjoy it.

Faire un essai! (crude Google Translation of 'Give it a try!)

I understand perfectly. I've wanted one of these for a long time but I still haven't pulled the trigger. I'm sure I'll get it eventually.

I have one, it really impressed me. Nice and slim good for back pocket carry, easy to sharpen and the blade grind is wonderful. My only gripe is the back spring is a little stiff and makes it somewhat hard to open, though I don't like any slip joints with a stiff spring.

They are excellent knives, but shop around before you buy it. The price can vary by a factor of 2.

I really like the Douk Douks. They are great no-nonsense-working knives with a slim profile and a great grind with a great steel. I like mine and carry it on the building lot or while wood working quiete often. The only thing I once had problems with was rust - the blade was rusty as well as the handle... not the good grey/black rust, but the red one which I could easily remove. But that was just once and I don´t know why, it never happened again...

I have the small one like Duane, and it hangs out in my camping pack with an Opinel no. 8, ready to go and do those camp chores with ease.

[This one was given to me by Commander Thomason some time ago. Thank you again for that.]

Well this thread is timely. I have two Spyderco knives on pre-order, which are not due until the Fall, so I needed an intermediate 'fix'. I was surfing the Baryonyx site and came upon the Douk Douk page. I have been looking at these knives for years, but never got around to ordering one until yesterday. I have a feeling that I will be liking the Douk Douk way out of proportion to what it cost.

Like most knives (in my opinion), the Douk Douk looks even better with some good mileage on it, including plenty of scrapes and dings. I need to rectify that.

You guys... reminding me that I still have to try out a Douk... ;)

The history is fascinating to me, and the whole French Foreign Legion bit makes me want to get a big one and keep it tucked inside my boot. :D

I carry a "modern" locking folder primary for the very remote chance that need a knife to dispatch a four-legged creature or whatnot. You guys may recall the BF member would used a Spyderco Caly 3.5 on a cougar/mountain lion that had clamped down on his son. Well, I know the Douk Douk is no "tactical" folder, but that spring is so stiff that its almost the functional analog of a locking folder. I'm not saying its the perfect knife for defense against four-legged creatures, but with that stiff spring I think it could be pressed into service for tasks often not associated with a traditional slipjoint design.

I do like this knife, and am pleased that this thread brought it back to my attention again.

Edit: I noted that Wikipedia (which I don't give much credence really) says the Douk Douk was pressed into service as weapon in Algeria and elsewhere. I guess you use what you got.
