It went something like this Two younger guys are working around a computer.
First one: "Look at this..."
Second one: "A flaming logo!... cool!"
Woman enters: "Haven't you guys got the new website done yet?"
First guy: "We're still working on it..."
Second guy: "Yeah, we're making it better..."
Woman: "If it gets any better, we'll go bankrupt!"
The point is that you can spend a lot of time and effort on cool dooh hickies for your website, animated flaming logos, etc. But they don't help communicate your message.
The purpose of your website is to sell knives, not to show off the latest cool web technology. Don't let the media get in the way of the message.
People aren't going to come to your website to find out what the weather is. There are many websites that do that much better than you ever will. People come to your website for knives. So, do that and do it better than anyone else. Don't invest in weather displays, invest in the best pictures for the knives, the best descriptions etc. And to attract people to your site as more than a shopping experience, give them enhanced knife-oriented content such as good, honest review articles, practical articles and demonstrations, interviews with makers and manufacturers, that sort of thing. That will bring knife-oriented people to your site more than a weather forecast.
