Just a quickie here,

I just wondered what your thoughts were on having a small monocular in your survival bag?I often carry one when hiking to help follow trails etc!

I think it is a great idea. I carry a pair of small Binoculars, but I've been looking for a monocular to reduce the weight.

Have a few pair of pocket binos and if I'm going for a day, instead of a short walk, I'll usually have a pair tucked into a pocket.

a mono seems like a good thing to me. Like the other guys said, I have a small cheapie 8X bino. I haven't used a mono, but for general lookin' around I don't see why it wouldn't be as good, while being smaller. At least I wouldn't have to adjust the eyepieces every time I take it out of the pouch

A pair of small binocs or a monoc is a great idea. Along with path finding now you have a magnifier.

Yes,
A small compact monocular can help you spot trails, cabins, campsites, firetowers, roads and rivers. If you are sighting for a proposed hiking route, it can help you see obstructions (those pesky 30 foot cliffs).

I like the compactness of the refractory style, monocular.
A lto of magnification ( 8x or 12x) in a short package.

I think that is a great idea too.

I became frustrated with the "straight through" types, and tried one of the "bendy around" types like in the pic. (These are technical terms, just not very well known ;) ) The optics were better in the bendy one, but I would not call them good.

Does anyone know of a good brand of monocular?

Zeiss Mini Quik is the one most people talk about, I have a Minox 8x16 that's the cat's ass.

Anyone have any experience with collapsible telescopes? I like how they look, but dont want to waste the money if it wont be useful.

I had a smaller one (14, maybe 18" extended) years ago, may still have it somewhere. Didn't hold the focus very well & was pretty well useless in low light. You can probably find a much better quality one than what I had but it's still not going to let much light in unless it has a fairly large aperture, which in turn would would make it bulky enough you wouldn't want to carry it.

I carry a little cheapie zoom monocular around in the urban fatboy. (<$20)
Very handy for a wide variety of uses, but has an unstable image. A small set of binoculars (or a GOOD quality monocular) would be better, IMO.

I have a little Brunton 7x monocular. It weighs 2.3 oz., and only cost me $21.00. I looked at the cheapies (other than this one) then looked through a few of the expensive ones ($150.00 and up), and had pretty much decided I had to have one of the expensive ones when the sales guy (listening to me bitch to myself about price) said "check this one out"....I walked out of the store with the Brunton five minutes later. Inexpensive, light, small, and damn near as good clarity as the ones costing ten times as much.

I second that the Brunton mono is a very good quality optic regardless of price, and when you take price into consideration it's exceptional.

I have had the 6x for three years. It has been everywhere with me, even Eastern Europe in the winter... burrrr, and had no problems with fogging or any other issues...
