I just gave in to tempatation at eknifeworks.com again.
On the way are a Shabaria PE and a Calypso Jr. SE, both VG-10. Total bill around $70. My wife'll give me that "look" if she sees that boxes. If I can just get them into My Room, I'll be alright. I have so many that she'll never notice a couple more. The Sharbaria is pretty distinctive though.....

The disease rages on

Odie, you must have gotten it from someone else.

My disease is totally under control.

I don't need any new knives. Not even nicepriced Spydies.

Not until payday anyway...:)

Yup, it's true...I'm EVIL...Even my wife says so, everytime the credit card bills roll-in.:D..:D.

Curse you, odie-wan!!! You stole my thunder!! :D

Seriously--you voiced my thoughts exactly (in a good-natured way, of course) with your post. I've been lurking on this site for close to a year now, and in that time, have been hypnotized by the EVIL forumites into buying a Spydie Mouse and a pair of Calypso Jr.'s.

Now, today I received in the mail a Shabaria and Navigator (no doubt ordered in a trance-like state after visiting this cursed site yet again...). Lemme tell you about the Shabaria--you're gonna love it! The balance, and weight-to-size ratio in the hand is phenomenal. With the odd but wonderfully-contured handle, the smooth, cool Micarta grips pose no problem. In fact, in my hand the Shabaria feels as "grippy" as the Calypso Jr., which DEFINES grippy! (Disclaimer to all: of course, YMMV--I have a medium-sized hand with relatively slender fingers...)

There's also a quality to the exotic Shabaria that borders on the mystical... Almost makes me want to scream, "By Ishtar and the hoary hosts of Hoggoth!" as I run recklessly down a torch-lit cavern full of zombies (Okay--maybe it just makes me want to boot up Ultima on the PC ;) ).

So anyway, Forumites--keep casting those spells, as LONG as you can guarantee the results will continue to be this satisfying! (And--in all seriousness--thanks to all of you for posting these "finds" so we can all share in the treasures!)

And you forgot to mention how sharp the Shabaria is! Just got one myself and an Ayoob.

You all have to find mental discipline to control the "Bug"-virus. Of course, I'm still trying to find it too...riiiiight after my next order....

Sad really, I used to only buy Spydies that I NEEDED. Now, I'm buying the ones that I MIGHT need.

You'll be very happy with the Shabaria and Calypso Jr.. I've got both, in PE, and they are just awesome. The Shabaria doesn't get carried, mainly because it is numbered, but my Calypso Jr. PE is a very tough little workhorse with exceptional grip that I use around the house and occasional EDC.

there is only one thing that wil stop me from collecting Spyderco...

Putting enough spending off that I starve trying to feed my habit... but I might just sell some and eat, then start again...

ULTIMAAAAAAAAA!
It'd be nice if I had a PC that could still play it . . . and I had 2 months to lock myself in my room with nothing but a computer, a bag of pretzels, and a case of Coke like I did when U7 came out.:D

Ahh, the memories.

And I agree, you are all bad. Really bad. Horrible. How many knives does a person need? Only one, until he visits BladeForums.

I'm patiently waiting for the Renegade and Vesuvius from Mike once he processes my order ;)

mschwoeb:

Oh, yeah--I was getting to that part about the sharpness...;) And one more thing about the Shabaria--it is the SMOOTHEST opening blade currently in my inventory.

diesel:

Ah...Another old-timer, I see...:D

You're making it hard to wait for it Paper-Cut. Maybe I'll just go read some HP Lovecraft to get into the mood for that mystical feeling. I think "The Lamp of Alhazred" will do the trick.

odie-wan,

Lovecraft should do just nicely... Or even a little L. Sprague de Camp, Robert E. Howard, or Karl Edward Wagner... Or another viewing of "Excalibur" or "Conan the Barbarian" or "The Lord of the Rings"... Well--looks like I've got my evening booked! :)

I'm confident it will be, but I truly HOPE your impressions of the Shabaria are as positive as mine. Have fun!

I just got a nice envelope in the mail today with an Almite Navigator with VG-10PE blade. Absolutely pristine and sweeeeet. Oh! How I missed my old navigator. Now I have to find a new excuse to got to Starbucks though.
Doc

Just got a sharpmaker too. I've been finishing everything with a small Lansky tri-angle that looks to be the equivalent of the Sharpmaker medium grit. I'm still getting the hang of it but this is the sharpest my ATS-55 Delica has been since I bought it. Now I have to tackle some chisel edged broadheads and the darned Tanto KISS.

Grrr grrr grrr! Reading this thread just cost me $$$! I have a new Navigator PE on the way. I really hope it's one of the VG10 ones. I will either thank you all or curse you all when I get it. (98% chance it'll be the first one).

OK, you're all forgiven. ;) I got my Almite Navigator from SMKW today. VG-10 steel, sure enough - very pleased about that.

My initial impressions are favorable. It shaved hair and sliced hanging paper effortlessly out of the box. It's very attractive and PC-looking. I had bought 3 Calypso Jr. SE's from SMKW two weeks ago to give as gifts to the groomsmen at my wedding. When I saw the Navigator I regretted not picking that one instead because it is so attractive.

On the downside, the Spyder hole edges are sharp (I will smooth these when I have a chance), as are the cutouts in the scales. There is a tiny dent on the almite/aluminum near the choil; very, very minor, but maybe that's why it ended up at SMKW (?). The action is not as smooth as my other Spydies, hopefully that will loosen up with use. Ultimately, I think the Calypso Jr.s will be a better gift because they are so functional and the serrations will last longer without sharpenening, which the recipients are unlikely to do. But I'm happy to add the Navigator to my collection.

Johnny

Update: I put some drops of BreakFree CLP onto each side of the blade near the pivot, and on the back of the blade where it pivots in the scales. After working it in, my Navigator is only about 10% smoother and is now stinky! I would not recommend BreakFree for this use. I should have just sprung for the $12 bottle of Chris Reeve flourinated lube when I bought my Sebenza!
