You've got to respect that.

I just got my 2010 spyderco catalog in the mail. There is a ton of cool knives in it, but I have I say I got a little emotional reading about the whale knife. It's a serrated blunted hook-shaped blade for cutting loose whales trapped in fishing equipment. I have special spot in my heart for those majestic animals and a slight fear of drowning. The fact that knife has saved lives is a big deal. That special knife is the work of a someone with a deep respect for our Earth's creatures, and it is great example of Spyderco's dedication to the blade as a tool.

Sal Gesser and his company seem to be on a quest to earn business by earning respect. That a pretty good business plan IMHO.

That is neat. Sal Glesser seems like a great guy committed to making excellent products, and it's nice to see him demonstrating his interest in preserving our planet.

I saw that small segment in the 2009 catalog. Very noble and awesome that of all knife companies, Spyderco took on the task.

While saving the whales is well and good, I still want to stick that blade on a six foot pole and visit a corn field somewhere:D

Can you say WICKED?

its not that they made the blade, but the fact that they lose like 100 dollars a blade makes it a more noble endeavor. thanks for helpin the whales Sal!

But, but... no Spyderhole??? :D

I'm very interested in hearing about how well 440C holds up in saltwater. I know it has good corrosion resistance, but it's not talked about in detail much anymore.

Well, (1) I think these blades aren't exactly EDC equipment :D

and (2) while 440C is a quite rust-resistant steel, I am (3) sure it is taken care of very well after use. After all, it is not THAT difficult to apply some oil, wax, TUF-glide or something on the blade to keep it from rusting while it sleeps in the storage room waiting for a whale to save.

Having a PhD in biology (actually natural sciences) , I have the deepest respect for anybody trying to help saving these wonderful creatures the "modern society" including japanese "scientific research" is going to erase from our planet permanently. It would be a loss we ALL would be going to be sorry for in the future. Even 420J steel would be fine with me to use for that... GO Sal! One more reason to admire you and your company.

This type of thing is why I won't carry anything but a Spyderco. I have had short lapses in judgment from time to time, but I always come back.
